I checked at http://www.buffalotech.com/products/memory/select/select-dimm/ and according the the memory configurator there your IBM Netvista 6792 takes this type of memory which can be ordered from them PC-133mhz SDRAM DIMM 168 pin, it indicated that your pc has 3 slots for memory and the maximum size you can put in each slot is 512 MB which would give you the maximum memory of 1536 MB. I have had problems in the past when replacing memory in IBM PC's some modules won't work because IBM uses different memory than other Manufacturers. But give Buffalo a try, their memory is guaranteed.

You do have the correct memory module. Have you tried to reseat it.
Try taking out the original memory and just installing the 512 module, see if it comes up and recognizes the new memory by itself. If it does, then put the original memory in the next slot.
Let me know.
