Question about Canon Speedlite 540EZ TTL Flash

Open Question

540ez flash I have a 540ez flash with a canon rebel camera. the only mode it will work in is multi and even then, it will not give me a confirmation light. i have never used an extra flash and wonder if I need to put new batteries in my camera??? wasn't sure how much power these flashes pulled. it works when the test light is pushed, just not unless the camera is in "m". i am at a loss! I usually work with my camera in the "green box" mode and it will not flash at all on my camera, but it flashed on my friends who has a canon rebel as well. thanks!

SOURCE: wont work

According to the Canon feature chart I have here; the 540EZ Speedlite flash is not compatible with the Digital Rebel XT in ETTL mode. The 480EG is also not compatible. The 550 or any of the others in that product line are would work. David Millier Advance Camera Repair

The Canon 540 EZ is a film camera flash, no doubt it might flash but possibly not at the right time.

What you need is a digital camera flash with the designation of EX

Shutter sticks

Does the light flash for 10 seconds, with a series of beeps getting faster before the picture is taken so you miss the shot, or are you saying the shutter stays open for several seconds giving you a whiteout picture?

If the former, then the self-timer is on. Press the button on the back of the camera to the right of the displays just under the AV button. The display icon will change from :-
Hand sweeping round clock = self timer mode
Simple square = single shot mode
Stacked squares = multi shot (keep finger pressed to keep shooting)

Built in flash problem

most likely you have set the camera to the auto mode and you are shooting in a place with plenty of light.
your camera has a sensor which activates the flash when needed.
you can set the camera to the manual mode so that you can chose the flash to work even in the day.

ALL Canon digital EOS cameras will work with E-TTL only. Solution: you need EX flash for full auto.
