When I connected my Magellan Explorist 400 to the computer via the usb port, Windows xp does not recognize it. It recognizes an unknown device. I have attempted connecting to to various usb ports on my computer with the same results. This makes it impossible to upgrade the firmware or transfer any maps directly to the gps. Fortunately, I can transfer maps to the sd memory card, but that is a limited solution. Any ideas?
Pachicat you were exactly right! I had mine connected upside down too! Thanks for the tip!

Thank you for your reply. Magellan does not appear to offer a usb driver for Windows XP. But I did accidentally discover that I had the cord attached to my gps incorrectly. The tab goes at the top rather than at the bottom where the slot is. Once I attached the cord correctly, my computer and gps communicated flawlessly.
I bought a new 500LE explorist with a hp pavillion and it never recognized the drive unless there was a blue moon or george bush was right about something.
Finally it seemed to always work when the backlight was on low... weird!
I bought my explorist 400 in ebay and came with a copy, not original instalation CD When instaling in my PC with windows XP a got a warning sign that said did not passed Windows logo testing. I don't nkow where to download the driver that work. Magellan doesn't have it available to sell, download etc. I have an original disk mapsend can not use because can conect my GPS and PC.
cfang,
I would ignore the warning message that the software has not passed the Windows logo testing. In my experience, I have not had any problems running software which has not passed Windows certification. My personal opinion is that Microsoft uses that as a scare tactic to force people to buy only Microsoft products.
Go ahead and install the software. I did and have had no problems with it.
I had the same problem. Called support and stayed for 40 minutes. The so called 'tech' determined that the usb cable must be bad. He's going to send me another one. Since we had bought 200 of those units, I tried to use another cable but with the same result.
Guess what, I read this post and switched the cable around (tab up instead of down) and it started working. So much for tech support!
