I did a engine swap on my 1988 chevy 4x4. went to a carbarated engine. problem is when i turn the ignition on the fuel pump pumpss fuel to the carb, then stops? is there a swich thats mights cause this to happen? can it be bypassed? or should i buy a aftermarket electronic fuel pump?
The electric fuel pump will have to much pressure for the carb, you need a pressure regulator to cut the pressure down to 5 psi. The reason the fuel pump won't stay running is because it gets its power from the oil pressure sensor by the distributor. Did you install this on the new engine and plug it in? The relay is what runs the pump for 5 seconds and shuts off.
What size engine did you remove?
On the oil pressure switch, by the distributor, does it have an orange wire and pink and black wire? The orange wire should be 12 volts all the time. The pink and black should be 12 volts when you have oil pressure. The pink and black goes to the fuel pump.
You need to hook that harness to a oil pressure switch for the fuel pump. If you put a jumper in the harness(orange to pink), the pump should run all the time.

I forgot to mention, I do have a fuel pressure regulator installed. Also I have the oil presure sending unit hooked up. I'm pretty much at a stand still right now, any other ideas? Thank steve
it was a 350 and thats what i put back in it. the new motor was from a 1984 suburban.
okay so this is what i just checked. on the oil press. sending unit i have a single wire hooked to it which is a black wire with the clip to slide on the opsu.. i found the other wire harness your talking about.( orange wire and a pink wire w/ a black stripe) i have not touched those two wire yet, but will give it a try. Thanks for all your help. Ill let you know in a few days, when i have time to get back to my truck if this works. again thanks for your help. Steve
