If the 8700 has RAW capability, go to the Shooting Menu and the Image Quality sub-menu. You can make the setting there.

SOURCE: Problem with nikon coolpix 8700

Same problem that would not allow me to take a picture without pressing the LOCK button on my Nikon 8700. Here is how I believe I fixed the problem:

Turn the camera ON.

Press MENU button on your camera to bring up the menu.

Scroll down to SET-UP, open the SET-UP menu by scrolling right.

In the SET-UP menu, scroll all the way down to FUNC (Controls) on page 2/3 , open the FUNC (Controls) menu by scrolling right.

You are now presented with 2 options:FUNC and AE-L, AF-L)

Select the FUNC option by right scrolling.

Choose the 2nd option: i.e the mountain, flower and timer icon (distance, macro and self-timer icon) by right scrolling.

Press the MENU button to get out of the menu.

Attempt to take a picture without pressing LOCK.

Should work! Anyways, it worked for me.

Cheers.

This is normal. Bear in mind that the JPEG file has all the image processing done, while the RAW is just the raw data. Depending on your image settings (contrast, saturation, sharpening, etc) you may see some differences.

What does raw+fine pictures mean?

The raw+fine setting indicates that your camera will take both raw (NEF) and high resolution JPEG pictures with every shot. You can change this to shoot just JPEG or just raw shots using your menu under the little camera icon. Click on image quality and it will give you multiple settings so you can choose only raw or only JPEG. You have three JPEG settings: fine, normal or basic.

I always shoot raw+fine which I think may be the default setting. I use the jpeg pictures for simple and quick editing and I use raw for detailed editing. JPEG pictures deteriorate quickly during editing while raw pictures can handle extensive editing without significant deterioration.

When you shoot raw+fine, it means the camera is actually storing two pictures of the same shot, one in each of the two formats. When you view the pictures in Windows, you can tell the difference between the raw shots and the jpeg shots because the raw shots have a broad black bar across the top and bottom of the picture while the jpeg shots fill the screen.

I took some pictures with my Nikon D60 camera in raw format now i am unable to copy them to my hard disc

You need a software program installed on your computer to work with and convert raw pictures. An example would be Photoshop Elements. Usually, cameras that can shoot raw photos come with software on a cd to work with the photos.

D70s I shoot raw. Thumbnail picture on LCD is ok. when downloaded to computer have picture is perfect other half out of focus and look like ribbon or rainbow?

When you are using the raw format, you are also taking a jpeg basic photo. The camera display on;y show the jpeg. Most windows programs only show jpg also. In order to view the raw files, you must use s/w capable, such as Photoshop or the s/w that came with the Nikon (Picture View, I think/ Compare both jpg and raw files. If they both exhibit the same anomoly, than more than likely you have a dirty or bad CCD sensor.

Slow down your shooting. The "R11" indicates that you can take 11 more images before the buffer is full and the camera will stop functioning until the images are moved to the memory card.
Select a smaller file size. Nikon cameras allow you to select from several sizes of JPEG as well as a RAW and a RAW + JPEG file. These files vary in size. If you select a smaller file size, the buffer will take longer to fill, allowing you to shoot longerTurn off long exposure noise reduction. This function causes the camera to expose twice for every image, and this can fill up the buffer quickly as those images are processed and written to the card.

There are important pictures tied up in the camera that I cant get to download to the card. raw is a word that shows on the screen.

If you shoot in RAW format these files will have an .NEF extention. Programs that can open these files are: Adobe CS3/Camera Raw, Nikon Picture Project, Nikon Capture, or BibblePro. All except Picture Project are commercial. Picture Project shouldve come with the camera, but is available on the nikonusa.com website.

How can I use the Adobe Camera Raw plugin after installing Nikon Software?

During the installation of Nikon View or Picture Project, your system is checked for an installed copy of Adobe Photoshop. If a copy with the minimum version is found, Nikon View will install file format filters which will allow Photoshop to open a NEF/RAW file directly (there are other plugins for YCBCR TIFF format from supported cameras). If you have the Adobe Photoshop "Camera Raw" software installed (optional in Photoshop version 7, included in Photoshop version CS) the Nikon file filters will open the file. If you prefer to continue using the Adobe software, find and remove the following plugins: Nikon NEF Plugin (Nikon View) Nikon NEF Plugin LE (Picture Project) After a restart of Adobe Photoshop, the Adobe Photoshop "Camera Raw" plugin will handle the opening of Nikon NEF/RAW format files. Please note that there was an update for Adobe Camera Raw plugin for support of D70 and Coolpix 8700 RAW files, if you encounter difficulty opening raw files from any Nikon product after removal of the Nikon Plugins, please visit the Adobe support site to obtain the appropriate update for the Adobe Camera Raw plugin.
