Samsung 52" rear Projection TV Convergence Problem

The Tv is about 5 years old and has developed red drooping lines at times with red lettering.. presume this is a red convergence problem, but I am no expert If the convergence is controlled by a chip (IC) I am experinced enough to change out the chip whether the chip is a push in or soldered on the main board as long as it does not require test equipment following installation. I do not have a schematic but hopefully there might be one inside the back cover. If this is possible where can I buy the IC from !! not being in the trade Can anyone help, comments. Thank you

I'm having the same problem on my 52" Samsung rear projection. It is also about 5 yrs old. Does anybody know about how much that costs to have fixed-ballpark figure?

In the end I had to get a TV repair man in !!

    cost me $400.00

He replaced both IC's unfortunaly to no avail had to wait another week while he contacted Samsung and waited on some other parts which I think was a resistor kit ( the resistors thru the normal heat generated had lost their values, I think)

He also cleaned the guns and some other adjustments, picture is fine now

I have replaced the 2 driver chips and the resistor associated,I have installed a fan to keep the chips cool, adjusted the convergence, worked great for 2 weeks, now when I turn on the TV,1 line about a foot from the top

droops down, the screen flutters,I turn off and on again,it stops fluttering, but the droop is still there,20 minutes later the droop is gone and stay's off

I am unable to align the red convergence on my Samsung HCM4215W rear projection HDTV. The factory "perfect picture" has displayed "no sensor data" since the set was repaired in 2004. The set had worked fine for the past 4 years after that repair and just failed suddenly after we returned from a 2 week vacation.

Replace both STK392-040 convergence IC's with OEM or better
quality = I use Panasonic with great success. They are soldered
in and requires at least PCB removal or perhaps entire chassis.

Hi. Depending on how bad the red convergence gone out you may not need any spare parts. You did not say that you have entered the normal menu & adjusted the convergence. If you havent adjusted the convergence which you should do a couple of times a year go in to the normal menu go to convergence & set it up. If it wont set up then you do have a problem & will need new ICs fitted.

I have a Hitachi and the red in the upper corner is drooping

All projection TV sets have two very common problems. One is convergence ( 3D/Warped video or dead set) the other is CRT fluid ( Dull Video). Here are more details and solutions for both.

Common Problem #1) Convergence has gone out

Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. In some cases the TV will also not show any video. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

This is a very common failure on these projection sets and a fairly simple DIY fix. All projection sets including Samsung, RCA, Sony, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Pioneer, Akai, GE, JVC, Toshiba, and others at some point will have the same problem.

Common Symptoms include....

  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • TV shuts off after powering on. Power light will blink. TV may also make a chirping noise.
Here are some pics of convergence problems.

Common Problem #2) CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

I have a green and red shadow on the words. It appears towards the top and bottom of the screen.

Hello,

It's a convergence issue. Go into the main TV menu under video settings and look for convergence. If it has an auto convergence select that and wait a minute the TV will adjust itself and give you a clear picture.
If the TV does not have an auto convergence and just regular convergence than select this. It will give you a grid pattern on your TV and you have to move the cursor (using TV remote) and adjust each "point" so that each line is perfectly white. If you notice red or blue anywhere on that "line" then you have to adjust using the up, down, left and right arrow keys to "line up the red and blue lines with the nearest white line. It takes time and patience to do, but when completed, all lines on the grid pattern should be pure white and you will have a great looking picture.
You have to do this will all TV inputs (Video1, Video2 and so on) the reason Zoom looks good, is because you never used that screen as much and so the lenses didn't have a chance to get out of synch.
RPTV's are made of the three lenses (red, Blue and Green) and as you watch TV, these lenses slowly get out of alignment. So you should do a convergence about twice a year to make sure nothing is out of whack.

You can pay somebody to do it, but may cost you like 100.00 or do it yourself, it is very easy just tedious and time consuming. If you have the auto convergence than your golden because this is the easiest way to "reset" the TV.

Since it is 4-5 years old it's a 50-50 chance that the TV has the auto feature. Good luck and if you still have the owners manual, I would read up on the convergence section in the manual.

It depends on what the problem actually is; are the streaks colors like red or blue outlines around lettering etc?

The more you tell me the better I can help. I will post a photo or two of what convergence problems look like.
This set is also prone to another problem, on a blank video input look at the screen: you should only see Video 1 (etc) and if you see faint curved lines (red, green or blue) and or the back ground is also wrong color you have the second problem.

let me know which it is.. If this information helped you rate this solution as very helpful as I do this here for free.

When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

Convergence problems are very common on all Projection TV sets including Sony, Samsung, JVC, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Akai, Pioneer, Hitachi, Zenith, and others. You can get a convergenece repair kit from the link below.

Common Symptoms include....
  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • TV shuts off after powering on - TV may also make a chirping noise.

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the settings menu then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move RED and BLUE in all directions - up, down, left, and right.

If you can't move them in all directions or cant move them far enough your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

Note: If you TV has as flash focus or magic focus button only try pressing the button. If it fails to fix the convergence your need to fix it. See below for a solution

You will need to replace the convergence chips and possibly some convergence resistors and pico fuses.
This is a a fairly easy DIY job if you know what you are doing. If you have never done this before we would advise calling a shop or if you want to do it yourself get a complete kit with instructions and support from www.TvRepairKits.com

Hi I have a 52" RCA big screen tv that is only 3 years old however we turned it on today and it is showing some red blue and green lines and the picture is blurry

Hello clara7,

This denotes a convergence problem. I would suggest that first you enter the menu of your TV ad try to do an auto converge on your set, if this does not work I would suspect that the convergence ICs have gone bad and need to be replaced. I would suggest that you have a qualified TV repair technician replace the convergence ICs in this set.I hope this helps,Shuttle83http://www.electron-age-technologies-llc.com
