Extremely loud squealing noise during steaming milk

The Breville Cafe Roma steaming wand makes an insanely loud high pitched noise (whether submerged in milk or not) when trying to steam milk.

  • wanderlust Apr 06, 2009

Thanks for the response. The machine is brand new, so it's hard to believe that it would be clogged already but I will definitely try to soak and scrub it! This is really only about the third time I've used the steaming wand and I've wiped it down religiously after each use. Regardless, I'll try and will report back.

It happens when you only have a small (less than half) amount of milk in your stainless steel jug. It's the stainless steel resonating with the vibration of the steam hitting the bottom. Try using a little more milk or keeping the wand up higher until a little froth has been made. Once the milk is frothy the noise should stop and you can lower the wand down again :)

This could be blocked. The best way to clear this is to switch off the machine and see if you can dismantle the frother arm. Sometimes the arm will come off by unscrewing. If it does, wash it in hot water and washing liquid. If it doesn't come off try putting the frother wand into a mug of cold water and allow it just to steam the water.
Frother wands don't just steam liquids - they **** up liquid which can block the vents and the actual steam hole which this machines' problem sounds like it does have.

I stopped the shrieking on my inexpensive farmer expr/cap maker by twisting a sewing needle in the hole. Brushes are made for this, tho. De-calc'ing helps (commercial product or citric acid from canning supplies in grocery).

Steam wand it NOT clogged...but steam & water coming out at connection point and not coming through wand. I took it all apart to clean it and now this is happening...

You either missed a seal when reassembling, or did not get a tight seal (may be "cocked") when you reassembled it. In other words, no pressure due to lack of seal.

My breville cafe roma wand is not steaming it is just making air bubbles

Have you tried cleaning out the machine? My steam wand started just spraying out a steady stream of water but was not heating up. I used the cleaning solution CLR (8 parts water, 1 part CLR) and let it run through the steam wand for awhile. At first it just kept streaming out then all of a sudden it stopped. I still kept it on just to see what would happen. After about 10 seconds all of a sudden the steam wand shot out whatever had clogged it and it works perfectly again! I had only used the machine about 10 times before this happened. I had not been cleaning it well after each use back then. Now I definitely do.

The frother on my cafe roma has stopped working. I removed the wand but where the steam comes out is stopped up. how do i fix this

The "frother" is probably blocked. Remove it and see if you can blow through it. If not, you can try cleaning it with a paper clip. If that won't work, place the metal frother tube in a pot of water with a bit of ammonia or vinegar in it. Heat the water to boiling, then let it simmer awhile. After it cools, try using the paper clip again. You should clean the steamer attachment after each use:
2. Remove the froth enhancer and rinse under warm tap water. 3. Wipe the steam wand with a damp cloth. 4. Briefly set the Selector Control to the ‘STEAM’ position to clear any remaining milk from the steam wand.

Too much water coming out of steam wand

I worked at StarBucks, what we did was put water into a contaner and steam the water, a lot of the time why the steamer doesn'..t work as well is because it is clogged. Another way to do it is to just run your steamer, also go to a coffee store and buy expresso machine cleaner. It could just need a good cleaning.

Frothe the milk?

he trick to this is making sure you have steam comming out of the wand and not water. To do this, make sure you get the steam started before you begin. To get a light foam that will not deflate, hold the wand just under the surface of the milk. You should hear a steady, high pitched noise and you should not hear the splatter of bubbles popping on the surface. Popping noises mean that the wand is too high in the milk and your froth will not hold up. A low pitched noise from the cup means that the wand is too far down in the milk. This will heat your milk (for hot chocolate), but will not give you a good foam. Good luck!
