I have removed the inner tub but can't figure out how to now remove the seals, etc. (the part right above the transmission).
I have an Amana. Model LW8363W2. It's 10 years old.
You need a special spanner wrench to remove the bearing/seal. you could try ordering from your parts dealer. my advice is to replace the machine, because you'll end up calling a tech and it'll cost you the price of a new machine

Sounds like the seal for the transmission is leaking oil through the seal. You will need to remove the tub or turn the machine upside down to remove the transmission and replace the seal. That is if the seal is still made.
your top transmission seal is leaking oil out of the transmission, and its getting forced up thru the tub seal this condition is called "back-wash" you need to remove the tubs both inner and outer to access the seal,it takes time
The part number for the mounting stem and seal kit is 6-2095720 it cost about 85 bucks retail. You will also need to buy a special maytag spanner wrench to remove the inner tub. Its NOT an easy job the inner and outer tubs and hoses all need to be removed. The seal kit comes with no instructions. If you had a service company do the job it would be probably around 250 maybe more. We charge 104.95 labor for the job. Good luck _MJ_
At this point in time it might be less distructive to go shopping for a new machine. To remove the inner basket you will have to remove the tub cover which will probably not seal after removal due to errosion of the tub. With the tub cover removed, remove the agitator which will uncover the next great feat, the hub nut which requires a special wrench to remove. If you can remove the hub nut after 40 years of corrosive detergent water you may be able to remove the inner basket if it isn't ceased on the drive block.
if you found the bold head in the tub chance are that the trunion bolt has broken off and cause the tub to become unsecure from the agistatir shaft and has torn the seal below the inner tub. remove the agitator and you will see the trunion and two bolts.the tub ring has to be removed and then the inner tub has to come out in order to replace tub seal.the tub seal part number is 5303279394 it cost around 45 dollars. the screws need for the locking plate are 131192800 and they caost about 4 dollars a piece.i hope this has helped you out.let me know how things go and if you need any more help let me know.
If you can't loosen the nut, you can break it with a hammer and a metal chisel. Tub nut is cheap. Grease on clothes = new transmission time.
By the way, after you remove the inner tub,.... you have to take the entire outer tub assembly out of the washer, flip it upside down, remove the yoke that holds the motor onto the outer tub, and pull the transmission out through the bottom of the outer tub.
YOU need to replace the "CENTER SEAL" , looks like thats the problem , no need to remove MOTOR , just the inner tub inside the BIG tub , andyoull see the SEAL.
you must first remove the agitater, then remove the inner tube, you'll need a spaner wrench, you now can see the tub seal, how you need to remove the 3 bolts around the bottom of the outer tub,now you can remove the outer tub and replace the tub seal,or use some 3m gasket seal,up to you,you can get a new tub seal on line for $10,let me know how you do-mike
