You have a big problem here. It sounds like the bearings on the drum shaft are going. this is over $400 for the back half of the outer drum and you have to be a very good mechanic to get it all apart. I currently have mine apart for the same problem which I verified by opening the door of the washer and lifting the inner stainless steel drum up and down with the machine off, of course. The tub is supported by two large ball bearings on the shaft that is supporting the stainless steel drum, and they don't sell just the bearings and seal, only the back half of the drum. If it has gotten bad enough to rub against the front half of the outer tub, it will probably have to be replaced also, about $120. This was probably caused by overloading the washer or washing something that was unbalanced and heavy; this destroys the seal between the inner drum and the heavy bearings, also not available separately, and lets water into the bearings in the aft outer tub which support the inner tub shaft. If you want to try to take this apart to verify, try looking at Whirlpool consumer services technical education group presents #L-68, Job Aid Part No. 8178076. I found it online. It has detailed instructions how to take this machine apart if you are a technician or a talented amateur, as I am. Good luck.
This is a big problem but it is a design issue with Galvanic Corrosion. Do a Google Search on "Whirlpool Corrosion Hall of Shame". Not an overloading issue but a design issue. The stainless tub has a cast aluminum spider assembly that is crumbling from galvanic corrosion. Fortunately there is lifetime warranty of the stainless drum with the decaying spider. Also the bearing is in the outer tub which has a 10 year warranty. This is 3 - 4 job for an experienced tech but you should be able to get the $1000 in parts for free from Whirlpool. Fortunately I have a 5 year extended warranty. They are replacing my Duet HT with a new one rather than fix mine.

you more than likely have a broken tripod leg on the metal basket inside, when it goes into the spin cycle the basket become un balanced and is rubbing on the inside of the front outer tub which is the sandy grey stuff you are seeing.
if its less than 10 years old it should be in warranty and you can have a whirlpool repairman fix it, you would just be reponsible for the labor, which will cost around 300
if you decide to fix it yourself, first take off the bottm panel on the front of the washer, and clean out the drain pump. (i found the cause of my problem in there, and to get the rest of the plastic shavings out. 2screws came off one of the legs of the tripod of the metal basket on mine). next you will want to take it apart, so that you can see the back side of the metal basket, (i suggest taking the shocks off the front and back of the tub asselmbly before as soon as you can get to them, they can break pretty easy.) one of the legs you will find ir broken, corroded, or missing screws.
if you have to replace any parts, the front outer tub is about 100, metal basket is 200, and shocks are 15 a piece at appliancezone.com
