I have a Frigidaire dishwasher and it has water in the bottom. I tried to run it through a cycle and no water will come into to the basin. It does run through but does not release or give new water, only at the very beginning for about 30 seconds and then the water goes right off. Any suggestions?

wash stands in bottom after completing complete cycle

  • brentwilk Sep 07, 2008

Water is not draining, bottom tub is full. I do not have a garbage disposal and nothing has been changed in the drain line. The unit is 4 years old. I've taken the drain hose loose where it ties into the drain pipe and there is not blockage. I've double checked to make sure that there's no build-up or kinks in my drain hose. I took everything apart in the bottom of the dishwasher, it looks like there is a ball that either seats against the drain or the inlet to the dishwasher, depending on the cycle......this was free of debris and looked to be fine. I know the pump is working because it sprays water in the clean cycle. Please let me know if you have any advice.

    Thank you,

    Brent

I had water at the bottom of my 4 year old plus dishwasher and of course I thought the worst. Did the pump go out, bad impeller, or what else could it be! I started with the easy stuff first and disconnected the drain lines. The drain line runs from the dishwasher to an air gap mounted to my sink, which keeps the drain line from getting an airlock. From the air gap device another larger line runs to the garbage disposal. I used an 8MM wrench to loosen the clamps enough to pull the drain lines off and drained them into a bucket. There really wasn't any resistance to water flow and no real chunks, I was disappointed.
I then took the actual air gap out of the sink by removing a large plastic nut and pulling the devise out from underneath the sink. When I inspected the air gap I saw a wad of hairy, feathery plastic stuff blocking the flow of water. I took the chunk out, reassembled everything and it works like new again.
It is a very easy fix and now even the area under the sink is clean to boot.

Awesome post! When I unhooked to hose from the dishwasher and ran the cycle, it pumped out water. When I hooked it up to the ptrap, it did not drain into the disposal. I thought the pump was not strong enough to pump uphill, but when I checked the ptrap, a few plastic pieces where lodged, blocking the flow. Fixed! Saved me over $100!!!!

Amazing, The problem was the garbage disposal. I found it odd that the dishwasher worked fine until I replaced the disposal. I thought maybe the dishwasher pump stopped working and took the whole thing apart with no obvious problems to be found. Nobody told me that the disposal inlet for the dishwasher was a plug that needs removed.
How easy was that!

thanks man! I'm a landlord and had a tenant moving in tonight and the darn thing wouldn't drain> i took the garbage disposal out and saw that there was this plastic plug stopping the flow of water. puched it out and it's working great! took less than 10 minutes.

  • awitha Mar 03, 2011

Same with me. Garbage Disposal went out. Replaced it with one from Habitat for Humanity resale store-works great but dishwasher stopped draining. Replaced the Electro whatever. It's the pump in the dishwasher-$50 later. Dishwasher STILL not draining. Finally decided to trouble shoot on-line. Should have done that first. Read this post. Totally forgot about the plug. Unscrewed drain hose to garbage disposal and sure enough, it still had the plug in. Hammered it out with a screw driver, screwed drain hose back on and walla. A working dishwasher again! I felt so stupid. Litterally took less than 10 minutes.

Since water doesn't drain out ,it could be a clogged in the drain line. Often the problem is at the point where the drain line attaches to the garbage disposer or household drain line. You should remove this line and clear it form any debris in the hose or the hose connection. Be sure to reattach the hose before starting the dishwasher again. Good luck!

Mine was the air gap and all I had to do is pull off the crome plated plastic cap and then snap off the cover to get at the fuzzy stuff that blocked the flow of drain water. sure would be neat to have a cross sectional view of the air gap. I took all the hoses off and removed the whole air gap before I realized it was so super easy to do.

Check to see if you can see water coming back into the tub--just look at the inlet and see if you can see dripping there. We just replaced the water inlet valve and solved a similar problem.

I suspect this is what my whirlpool DW is doing and will check the same part. Mine completes a full cycle, then then over time, it fills back up with clean water in the off mode. Thanks.

My newer, just out of warrantee failed to drain, used a towel to absorb most of the water from the bottom of the washer, gave the pump a twist, then tried it out of the machine, the pump just wiggled, wouldn't spin, got a new one, works like a charm. Whirlpool product, just twist and they pop out, super easy to change.

Just try running your garbage disposal for a little bit.... worked for me

Posted on Aug 23, 2008

For the person whose plumber disconnected the dishwasher, let me guess - he replaced your garbage disposal.

Most garbage disposals have a plug that seals the dishwasher inlet by default. This plug will need to be removed. You will have to refer to your garbage disposal's documentation to determine how to do this properly.

Or the drain pump impeller is blocked by some debris.  Verify the pump is running by sending it to the drain cycle.

SOURCE: Water didn't drain, left in bottom of washer tub

I had similar problem and it ended up being a clog at the point where the drain hose meets the garbage disposal. I had to unhook the hose and clean out the food that had accumulated (horrible smell). You may have to stick a screwdriver into the garbage disposal hole where the hose fits and clean the food out there also. Then put the hose into a bucket and run a few cycles to ensure the hose is free.

Standing water in dishwasher

Good Afternoon friend, thank you for your post!

I understand that you have some standing water inside of your Frigidaire dishwasher. It is a normal operation to have anywhere from 2 to 3 inches of water inside of the tub of your dishwasher. If it is anything more than that you could have an issue with the drain pump or drain line.

You may want to check the drain line for any restrictions or clogs that could cause improper siphoning from your dishwasher. You should also make sure that the filter located in the bottom of your tub is clean, that could cause water to stand within your dishwasher. I hope this information is helpful. -Matt

How to make dishwasher drain? Water stands in bottom after washing. Also has buzzing sound!

Most likely you have something hard that got past the filter and got stuck in the drain pump, keeping the impeller from turning. Unplug the dishwasher. Siphon or vacuum out the water from the dishwasher. Remove the toe-kick panel(s) to get to the drain pump. Look carefully for a realease tab to press, then rotate the drain pump 1/8th to 1/4th turn to release it. Check for and clean out any foreigh objects, then re-assemble.

I have standing water in my dishwasher. How do I unclog the drain?

It will be smelly water and if you have access to a shop vac that will help you remove the standing water if not use a bowl or turkey blaster listed below.
Use a small bowl to remove standing water from washer to access screen to remove and check for blockage. Once you have removed all the water that you can with a bowl or cup. You can use a turkey blaster to sucton remaining water from dishwasher.
Then you remove screen and clean out drain and also check drain line for blockage from dishwasher to under sink.

Clean out drain to unclog in bottom of dishwasher and you may have to remove drain line to clean it.

Dishwasher drains but leaves behind about 1/2" of standing water

Water standing in the bottom of the tub is normal.
A small amount of clean water around the outlet on the tub bottom at the back of the tub keeps the water seal lubricated.
