Canon a530 powershot won't snap a picture

Hi, We have had this camera for 3 years with no problems but lately when we try to take a picture and all we get is a flashing lightning bolt on the screen and it won't give us the green boxes or even the orange front light. It is in the auto setting and we tried many sets of new batterys. I even pulled out all the batteries including the coin cell over night to maybe reboot the proccessor. No luck. Thanks for any help in advance. John

    pipesmoker,
Good suggestion. I think your onto something. When it does decide to take a picture, there is a orange flashing light by the small view finder. That flashes forever and wont let you take another picture until it stops. What we then do is cycle power, then it's ready to go again. Wierd.
    Maybe this is another clue.
    Thanks,
    John

I have canon power shot A530 when I insert memory it shows memory erorr and can not take picture. what is the solution?

The flash symbol keeps flashes and wont snap when i want to take a picture, but it snaps when i turn off the flash

I have precisely the same problem as Guest at June 3, 2008. When it's in auto mode, if the button is pressed, the orange 'ready' light for the flash comes on, but it refuses to snap a picture. If I turn the flash off, it will work.

I don't think it's related to battery life, as I haven't had any problem with that--the batteries are just fine.

My husband tinkered with the function/set stuff to manually turn the flash from 'auto' to 'ON' and then back to 'auto', and that seemed to help, but the camera shortly started having the original problem again, and this time that first 'fix' didn't work. (Who knows if it did the first time, either, could have been a fluke.)

I have the same problem, but I know it isn't the spring recall, I checked the cannon website and my spring looks normal.

Recently, my Canon A540 wont shoot when i use the flash, (either manual of auto where the environment is dark and needs a flash). But when set to no flash, the camera will actually work.

What seems to be the problem?

Sounds like the flash isn't charging, as the flash icon flashes while the flash is charging before letting you take the photo. Put it in "P" and disable the flash and see if it'll let you take a photo. G>

I believe the short battery life problem is related to the no flash problem. Alkaline cells are 1.5v while rechargables are 1.2v. I suspect that the voltage sensing circuit in the camera is failing and thinks the voltage from rechargeables is too low so is shutting down.

Know this is an older post but... Some of The Canon Powershot A530 and A540 cameras are subject to an advisory recall. Seems that a small spring on the battery compartment door can short out the batteries. Suspect this of yours, in that you mention what sounds like a very long time for the flash to recharge. If your camera is on the list, Canon should fix this for you for free, including free shipping both ways. This is regardless of your camera's warranty status. First thing, get your camera back from that particular repair person, as Canon may repair this problem for free. Some of The Canon Powershot A530 and A540 cameras are subject to an advisory recall. Seems that a small spring on the battery compartment door can short out the batteries. Suspect this of yours, in that you mention that your batteries aren't lasting long. My Canon Powershot A530 is having problems. When I plug it into my computer it fails to detect any photos, even though I took many new photos. What's going on?

Try NOT connecting your camera to your computer.

The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.

Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive, the same way you copy any other files. Or you can use any photo cataloging program.

1. Try to reinstall your camera driver / software again.

2. Restart the PC/Laptop.

3. Now, connect the two devices for importing pictures!

Cannot transfer files from computer back to Canon Powershot A530

Your camera is designed to be a source of pictures, not a destination. If you want to copy pictures to a memory card, you need to use a card reader and not a camera.

Try removing the memory card and inserting it again.
Also, does the computer detect the camera properly?
