my laptop seems to overheat quite quickly and i dont think the fan is kicking in wen it should. Also i have problems with startup and sometimes it will not load all the tray icons at the bottom right of screen and so i need to turn the laptop off maybe up to 10 times b4 it loads properly and i am able to get onto the internet etc....

You can try a laptop cooler, the type that plugs into your USB port on the laptop. Antec has a good one. Make sure the laptop isn't sitting on a bed or something similar and there is good circulation under it. Try shooting canned air through the air vents - gently.
