I need to id cable fixing points on motherboard

I need a pin layout for all attachable cables ie power switch, speaker, disk access etc for a motherboard with the reference S61, which may be an award board. but the only references i can find are S61 99118-8 4835G01.011. it has an intel pentium II processor chip

How to read old quantum 100MB HDD

Does you motherboard have the old PATA connectors (white 4 pin molex power and 40/80 pin flat & wide data cables?
Being that old you may have to get the little jumper pins at the back to be set in the correct layout (probably slave).
You can also get external PATA cases or docking stations and set it up that way.

Fix wireing on p6610f

This solution will be long in length. Therefore a lot of reading.
In essence I am typing out a motherboard manual, of a sort.

May look complicated. This is because I get very detailed.
If there is ANY area I have explained, that you do not fully understand, please post back in a Comment.

I will try to break it down, and/or use a different method of explaining.

1) Let's start with power cables from Power Supply, to motherboard;

Looking at the photo of the motherboard, it is 90 degrees to the LEFT; in comparison to how it actually is mounted in your computer case.

I would also like you to scroll down, towards the bottom of the page; and look at the illustration of the motherboard.

This way we can compare the two together, as I guide you.

A) At the bottom of the motherboard is the connector, for the 24-pin ATX main power cable.

Yellow/White in color, 24 socket holes. (2 rows of 12)

This is a General example of said power cable, and respective connector on motherboard;

[Note* Color of power cable connector, and motherboard connector; does NOT matter ]

In relationship to how it actually sits on the motherboard, while mounted in Your computer case; you will find it all the way to the LEFT.

Note the Lock Clip on the power cable's connector.
Has a hooked end that goes over a TAB, on the motherboard connector.
When deemed to be plugged in tightly, and correctly; the hooked end will be Over the Tab.

Operates on the same principle as a see-saw on a playground.
Squeeze the top in, to release when disconnecting.

B) 4-pin ATX +12 Volt power cable.

Yellow/White 4-socket hole connector. In the photo, above the processor socket, and to the Right of the square Aluminum finned Heatsink.

You will find it to the Right of the processor, and Below the aluminum finned Heatsink; motherboard mounted in computer case.

Note Lock and Tab design, just like the 24-pin ATX main power cable.

That's it for power cables TO motherboard.

2) The front of your computer is the Front Panel.

[Regressing;
Header; Rectangular small piece of plastic, that has contact pins sticking up.
You have 3 Black headers on the motherboard, a Yellow header (1), and 2 White headers.
This will become more self-explanatory, as we go on ]

To the Left of the 24-pin ATX main power cable's, motherboard connector; and to the Left of the ram memory slots; are three Black headers. (Photo)

(Mounted in computer case, To the Left/Top of motherboard)

The Orange connector you see to the left of the ram memory slots, is a SATA connector.
Looking at the Motherboard Layout, you will see it is SATA4.

To the Immediate RIGHT of it, is the Front Panel header.

The area of contact pins on the motherboard, that the Main wires from the Front Panel go to; is the Front Panel header.

Main wires such as Power On switch, Power On LED light, Harddrive activity LED light; and Reset switch.

On the Motherboard Layout, it is marked as J18.
You should have a cable coming from the Front Panel, whose plug on connector; matches this header.

Has 9 socket holes. 5 on one side, 4 on the other.
The missing pin in the corner, on the Front Panel header on motherboard; shows you which way the cable's plug connector, goes.

3) I do not know sir, what the long black header is to the left, of the Orange SATA4 connector, is. It is P17.
However looking at the length, you should find only ONE cable, and plug on connector; that matches it.

Should come from Front Panel. (IF it is used)

4) I do not know what the black header is, below J18.
(Again, J18 is the Front Panel header)
I believe with process of elimination, that the cable that goes to this header, will become readily apparent. (IF it is used)

5) There are Four SATA connectors on the motherboard.
SATA1 = Dark Blue
SATA2 = White
SATA3 = Light Blue
SATA4 = Orange
(Photo. Also compare in Motherboard Layout)

This is where a SATA data cable plugs in.
Your harddrive is a SATA unit. Your optical drive (CD/DVD drive) is a SATA unit.

The Harddrive plugs into SATA1.
The optical drive plugs into SATA2.
Any additional SATA units will plug into SATA3, or SATA4.
Example; A second SATA optical drive.

This is a general example of a SATA data cable, and SATA data connector on motherboard,

Note the SATA data cable connector. Has an L-shaped opening.
When connecting the SATA data cable to Harddrive, or optical drive;

Turn this L to the Left, and upside down. The 'foot' of the L always points DOWN.

Note the SATA data connector example shown. This is an OPEN design. Your SATA data cable connectors on motherboard, are a CLOSED design. Still has L-shape on motherboard connector, though.

The SATA data cable connector that goes to the Harddrive, and optical drive; is usually a 90 degree bent elbow.
NOT always though.
The SATA data cable connector that goes TO the motherboard, is a Straight connector.

Between a SATA data cable connector, and a SATA power cable connector; a SATA data cable connector is Shorter in width.
SATA data cable connector has 7-pins.
SATA power cable has 15-pins,

Same L-shaped interface is used.

Most of the time there is a Lock, on the SATA power cable connector. May be a Tab that sticks up, or a small lever, or a rubber 'bulb'. Depress with thumb to connect, or disconnect.

USB headers on motherboard, and USB connectors on motherboard.

View the motherboard photo at the Top, and also the Motherboard layout illustration, at a little over halfway down the page.

1) In the motherboard photo, all the way to the right side. View the Yellowish/Whitish connector, that has two columns of 12 socket holes.

This is where the 24-pin ATX main power cable plugs in.
In the motherboard layout illustration it is labeled - ATX1.

Here is a general example of this power cable, and respective connector on the motherboard,

Note that new Power Supply's, generally come with a 20+4-pin ATX main power cable.
This is so it can be used on the older computers that used a 20-pin ATX main power cable, and newer ones that need a 24-pin ATX main power cable.

Do not mix it's extra 4-pin power cable, with the 4-pin ATX +12 Volt power cable.

Note the Lock on the side/middle. It has a hook on the end. The hooked end goes over a Tab, on the motherboard's connector.
The Lock works on the same principle as a see-saw on a playground.

You squeeze the top near where the wires come in, and this brings the hooked end away from the Tab, on the motherboard connector.
With the top of the Lock still squeezed in, the power cable is then removed USING the connector. (NOT the wires)

When assured that the power cable is plugged in tightly, and correctly, the hooked end of the Lock will be over the Tab, on the motherboard connector.

2) Look to the left of the Processor socket, and halfway in-between it, and the outside edge of the motherboard.
Whitish 4-socket hole square connector.

This is where the 4-pin ATX +12 Volt power cable plugs in. Power for the Processor. Note that it also has a Lock, with a Tab on the motherboard connector.

In the motherboard layout illustration it is labeled - PWR1

That's it for the motherboard as for power cables that plug into it.

The rest of the power cables from the Power Supply, plug into the optical drive/s, harddrive, and card reader if used.

4) If your harddrive is an IDE (PATA) unit, it will use a 4-pin standard Peripheral power cable. Same with an optical drive that is an IDE (PATA) unit,

The computer case fan plugs into SYS_FAN1 connector, which is below the PWR1 connector. You may also have a computer case fan that uses the above power cable.

5) If your Harddrive, or optical drive/s are SATA, they will use a SATA power cable,

6) A Card Reader uses a power cable, that is also used for a Floppy Drive.

It is a 4-pin Small Peripheral power cable.
Has the same voltage wires; (Yellow - 12 Volts, Red - 5 Volts), and two Black ground wires, but a smaller connector, than a 4-pin Standard Peripheral power cable,

The front of your computer is the Front Panel.
The area of wires on the motherboard, that the main wires from the Front panel go to, is the Front Panel header.

Although the Front Panel header has NOTHING to do with the Power Supply, I will include it also,

Motherboard positioned in computer case; Processor to the Top, Ram Memory slots to the Right;
The Front Panel header is at the bottom/right of the motherboard.

There are 4 pins across the Top row, 5 pins across the Bottom row.
The pins on the Top row are numbered EVEN.
The pins on the Bottom row are numbered ODD.

Starting on the LEFT side going towards the Right, Top row;
Pins 2, 4, 6, and 8. There is NO Pin 10.

Starting on the LEFT side going towards the Right, Bottom row;
Pins 1, 3, 5, 7, and 9.

A) Pins 1 and 3 are for the HarDDrive activity LED. (Light Emitting Diode)
Pin 1 is for the Positive ( + ) wire.
If the HDD LED is dim when the harddrive is active, switch the wires around.

B) Pins 5 and 7 are for a Reset switch, IF a Reset switch is used.

C) Pin 9 is N/C. Not Connected. Reserved for factory use.

D) Pins 2 and 4 are for the Power On LED.
Pin 2 is for the Positive ( + ) wire.
If the PWR ON LED is dim when the computer is on, switch the wires around.

E) Pins 6 and 8 are for the Power On switch.

F) Again, there is No Pin 10.

A) 24-pin ATX main power cable:

In the photo, look to the right of the Blue ram memory slots.

The Yellowish/Whitish connector to the right of them, with two columns of 12 socket holes, is where the 24-pin ATX main power cable plugs in.

This is a general example of a 24-pin ATX main power cable, and it's respective connector on the motherboard,

Note the middle photo, and the Lock on the side of the power cable's connector. The Lock has a hooked end that goes over a Tab, on the motherboard's connector.

The Lock works like a see-saw on a playground. The top is squeezed in, and this brings the hooked end away from the Tab, in order to remove the power cable.
When assured that the power cable is plugged in tightly, and therefore correctly, the hooked end of the Lock will be over the motherboard connector's Tab.

B) 4-pin ATX +12 Volt power cable:

In the center of the motherboard, under the Processor socket, is the Northbridge chip. (Part of the motherboard chipset)
It is under a finned aluminum Heatsink, that resembles a meat tenderizer's head.

Draw an imaginary line up above it, in-between the Processor socket, and the aluminum finned Heatsink, and go straight LEFT.
See the whitish 4-socket hole square connector?

In the Motherboard Layout it is marked by - JPW1

This is where the 4-pin ATX +12 Volt power cable plugs in. It is power for the Processor. Has the same locking setup as the 24-pin ATX main power cable, and it's motherboard connector.

C) In the Motherboard Layout to the top left corner of ram memory Slot 1, (DIMM1), is where the Processor fan connects.

D) In the Motherboard Layout just below JPW1 is where the computer case fan plugs into. SYS_FAN1

E) In the Motherboard Layout - SATA1 - is where the SATA Harddrive data cable plugs into. (Below ram memory slots)

The SATA power cable from the power supply, plugs into the SATA harddrive. Note that the SATA power cable's connector, is longer in length than the SATA data cable's connector.

IF, your SATA harddrive has a provision for a SATA power cable, AND a 4-pin standard Peripheral power cable, ONLY use just the SATA power cable!

Otherwise you will burn up the SATA harddrive. May not happen right away, but I assure you it will happen!

[ A note on SATA.
The beauty of SATA, is that you can plug into ANY SATA connector on the motherboard, and BIOS will see it.

If you plug the Harddrive into SATA 1, or SATA 2, or SATA 3, or SATA 4, connector on the motherboard, IT DOES NOT MATTER.
BIOS will find the Harddrive, or optical drive ]

Proper installation of tower wires

According to Gateway Support, the Gateway 505GR desktop computer uses an Intel (Ausberg) 915G motherboard,

Scroll down to the photo with the sections marked in red.

In the top link, looking at the motherboard with the computer case open, the USB and Firewire (1394a) cables, can be seen attached to the motherboard near the letters D, E, and F.

In F that red cable is a SATA cable. One end attaches to the back of the SATA harddrive, (The angled end), and the other end of the SATA cable attaches to one of those SATA headers on the motherboard.
(SATA header = SATA connector on motherboard)

Preferred SATA header for the Harddrive is SATA 1.
DOESN'T matter though. That's the beauty of SATA. You can plug the SATA data cable into ANY SATA header on the motherboard, and BIOS will find the harddrive.


In the second link, looking at the motherboard photo shown, and comparing it to the view of the motherboard as mounted in the computer case, the Front Panel header is at the very Bottom Right.

1) Power LED = Power On LED light
2) Hard Drive Activity LED = LED light that flashes (Usually red in color) when your harddrive is active. Being used.
3) Reset switch = Reset Button. The Reset switch is behind the Reset button. (IF the computer uses a Reset switch)
4) Power Switch = Power On switch
5) Forget about Pin 9. That's for 5 Volts DC - Out. Used by factory.

Which wires coming out of the Front Panel, are the Power On wires, Harddrive LED light wires, Power On switch wires, etc.?

Remove the Front Panel, and trace where the wires end.

IF, the wires already installed coming from the motherboard to the Front Panel, are Too short, you should make notes before you remove them from the motherboard.

Note what color pair of twisted wires, went to where, in the Front Panel.
Compare to the chart of the Front Panel header given above.
(IF any wires are still connected to the Front Panel header on the motherboard)

Once the Front Panel is removed, it's usually pretty easy to trace the two wires up to the Power On switch.
Same for the Power On LED light.
Again, same for the HarDDrive activity LED light.

The SATA harddrive requires a DATA cable, and a SATA power cable.

The connector for a Data cable has 7 contact pins. It is the shorter connector.

The connector can be at a 90 degree angle as shown, or a straight connector.
IF the data cable has an angled connector, it plugs into the Harddrive.
Straight connector goes to the motherboard.

The connector for a SATA power cable has 15 contact pins. It is the longer connector,

Hi ,, i have just fitted a intel d845gvsrb in my pc but i am not sure where the tower speaker wire , reset sw , power sw , power led , h h d led and the black single one go`s can you please help me ..

The Picture below shows you the locations of the places to put those wires are in relation to your motherboard. In yellow is the power switch and such. and the audio connection is in red.

To install the cable that connects a front panel audio solution to the front panel audio header, follow these steps:
  1. Turn off all peripheral devices connected to the computer. Turn off the computer and disconnect the AC power cord.
  2. Locate the front panel audio header (J8A1).
  3. Remove the three jumpers from the header (this disables the back panel audio connectors).
  4. Install a correctly keyed and shielded front panel audio cable.
  5. Connect the audio cable to the front panel audio solution.

To restore back panel operations follow these steps:
1. Remove the front panel audio cable. 2. Install a jumper on pins 5-6 (rear R channel). 3. Install a jumper on pins 9-10 (rear L channel). 4. Install a jumper on pins 1-2 (mic). 5. Replace the cover.

I need help connecting the power on cable and led cable as well as the hard drive light cable. for my emachine w3644

These cables are attached in the lower right corner of the motherboard. There are two rows of pins there. Probably 10 pins in all. They should be marked with letters something like hdled (hard drive LED), pwr (power light) pwr sw (power switch) spk (speaker) etc. Anyway, if you can't find markings, hooking the little plugs up to sets of the pins one plug at a time will tell you which works.You can't hurt anything by trying various combinations

Computer won't begin boot process and shuts down in seconds...won't give time to try to boot from recovery disk

This could be a power supply problem, first to assertane what the problem is you will need to take the side panel off, make a note of where the cables go before touching anything, remove any ribon cables from the motherboard and any other peripherals attached to the computer ie printer, scanner,etc, you only need the keyboard and mouse attached at this point, reboot the mechine. post back what happens and i will run you through the next step.

if you are talking about connecting the front chassis connectors to your motherboard then you need to find out the exact model of the MB... im assuming its Intel since its a Dell.
