Question about IBM ThinkVision L170 17" LCD Monitor

1 Answer

LCD image distorted and flickering.

Please take a look at the picture in this URL The monitor on the right is displaying the symptom that I am looking for opinions on. This has got to be a fairly common issue with these IBM LCDs, as I have 3 of them that are doing it. They will flicker the images for a while and then they might straighten up and work correctly for a while, but they always go back to doing it eventually. Might stay flickering for days, might work for days. One just never straightened back up. I suspect a solder joint issue, or failed/failing component. Any tips on where to start looking on this model? Thanks James

Re: LCD image distorted and flickering.

The Thinkvision series has a known issue with capacitors on the power board.
It is an easy repair, though if your not confident with electronics then get your local TV man to have a look.

Your eBay link isn't working by the way.

Hope that helps.

Image on screen is distorted and i am unable to see anything

I think the picture board on your lcd is malfunctioning, that is why the image is distorting and since you said you cannot see anything, it means the picture board of your lcd has developed fault.

The best thing for you to do now is to take the lcd to a local repairer within your vicinity or any service center to help with the replacement of the picture board because the fault is not something you can fix yourself, in order not to complicate issues.

Take care.

Screen stretched out horizontally and distorting picture. None of the settings buttons appear to solve this. I can shift the image vertically or horizontally; but not squeeze it horizontally.

There are adjustments in the size of the items on a screen under the screen properties, settings. If you right click on the desktop screen and then properties you can get there. There is at least one size which causes a distortion of images being displayed. This may be your problem.

Multiple vertical color lines,i take the picture, how can i send you this photo?

There are two ways you can do this.

1. post the image to a site like photo bucket or flicker and post the link here
2. next to the You Tube on the top of the post reply window click the image. This will open a window. Browse to where you have the image saved and click it. This will insert the image to your reply.

Screen image appears fuzzy, jumpy and broken up into lines.

gardenman13, I would certainly complain to HP about their w22 monitor!! Find out if the units warranty is still valid and can be swapped-out for a REFURBISHED unit. Your w22 shouldn't be hazy, distorted, or flicker for any reason. My best guess is that it (w22) has problems inside with it's "cold-cathode-fluorescent-lamps" and electronic ballast circuit called an INVERTER circuit, which could also cause the main "switch-mode-power-supply" to go a little NUTS upon STARTUP!! FYI you are dealing with a technology similar to the curlie-Q CFL screw-in light bulbs. Their ballast's are called CONVERTERs (ac to ac) and are cheaper. Your lanps are thinner and straight, hung on rear of your LCD panel. I hope this was informative. Please rate this on fixya. 12fixlouie

1800FP image distorted

this is a little known porblem Dell has. Dell is not tell anybody.
I don't know if this is going to fix the monitor for the long haul, but it should help in the mean time.
grable the frame of monitor with both hands, apply some pressure, not too much (you will break the glass). change location and do the same thing. the screen will come back at certain location, when you apply the pressure to the frame. this is because some connection inside of the frame is coming loose with time.

good luck
if that doesn't fix the proble, please post.

Monitor flickering and adjustment buttons locked

If the refresh rate is not properly set the monitor may have a wavy or an appearance that lines are going down ... This may also cause a flickering affect.
Distorted or skewed image on monitor. Issue: Distorted or skewed image on monitor.
Cause: This issue can occur from any of the below possibilities.
  1. Windows issue.
  2. Loose or defective cable.
  3. Refresh rate issue
  4. Interference.
  5. Bad monitor.
Solution: Windows Issue If your monitor has a proper display until it gets into Windows 3.x, Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows NT, Windows 2000, Windows ME, or Windows XP please see document CH000121 for software or setting related issues.
Loose or defective cable You may receive a distorted image when the cable is loose or defective. Disconnect the video cable going from the back of the computer and verify that no pins are bent, burnt or broken. Once verified re-connect the monitor cable.
Refresh rate issue If the refresh rate is not properly set the monitor may have a wavy or an appearance that lines are going down or across the monitor slowly or fast. This may also cause a flickering affect. Additional information about how to change the refresh rate can be found on document CH000558.
Interference A distorted image can be caused by magnetic or other types of interference. Verify no speakers, fans or other magnetic devices are close to the monitor.
Bad Monitor If the above possibilities have been checked it is likely that the monitor is bad. To verify this it is recommended that the monitor be temporarily disconnected and then connected to another computer. This can be a friends computer, a work computer, and/or a computer at a service center. You can also help verify a defective monitor by connecting another monitor to your computer. Note: Connecting your possibly defective monitor to another computer will in no way harm the other computer.

Compaq monitor

OK your monitor is failing in the Horizontal circuitry.... OR the PSU is failing to supply the correct Voltages. Either way it is probably going to fail completely soon. With monitors so cheap now, here in NZ they are about NZ$20.00 - $50.00, repair isn't adviseable to do so, it would make more sense to put the Repair monies into a NEW screen... maybe time for an LCD?
