I have the same problem with a SmartDisk Crossfire 160GB (both USB/Firewire enabled). I've submitted a support request with SmartDisk and it's still pending.

When I first got this external hard drive, it was easy to use: just plug it in to my laptop or my desktop. Both PC's were running Windows XP and automatically recognized the drive. I was able to do a backup using the software that they included (Bounceback Express).

Then the second time I plugged it, it was not mounted as a drive on one of my PC's. And now, it won't mount on either PC.

I've tried different cables (both USB and firewire). I've also tried it on 3 other PC's running Windows XP, Windows 2000, and Windows Vista, respectively. The same problem occurred.

On my laptop, when I connect it (either USB or Firewire), it actually shows up as a device under My Computer--> Management-->Device Management. However, it does NOT show up under My Computer-->Management-->Disk Management. Only disk drives show up there: my internal hard disk and my CD/DVD drive.

This drive is basically brand new, having been used only twice. It's been well-treated, never dropped or anything like that.

I think I've seen similar problems with the SmartDisk listed by other users on FixYa, and not just with the CrossFire but also the FireLite and other models.

I have the same problems with my 40G FireLite on my Mac. It worked for a little while but then started playing up. Seems like the more data I store on it the worst it got. Now it doesn't show up at all on my computer - still lights up though.

I'm completely at a lost to know what to do. Can anyone help, please?

I have a Mac and when I went to the Genius bar they noticed that I needed to reformat my HD for Mac. It was automatically formatted for PC. If you take it somewhere for someone to do it for you make sure you have backed up your information because they will have to erase it. It shows up on my desktop now.

In control panel/hardware and sound/device manager under disk drives, while firelite is plugged in right click on firelite and delete driver. unplug firelite, reboot then plug it back in. It should reinstall the driver and harddrive should work again...

Hi, Based on your post/description: 1. Tried on 3 different computers - no go, so it's not a PC problem; 2. Tried replacing the cable - no go, so it's not an interface problem; 3. That leaves you only with the Firelite itself. An external hardrive would consist of 2 main parts, the electronic board and the hard disk itself. The board seldom (if ever) fails. Its function is to provide conversion/interface from the SATA/IDE connectors of the HD to the out USB/Firewire. The HD more often than not fails. Most external storage uses a standard HD inside the enclosure. Your possible options: a. Claim warranty/replacement; b. Replace the HD only; c. Physically remove the HD and connect it direct to a desktop either as IDE or SATA and run manufacturer's diagnostic and/or third party recovery software; d. Seek services of professional data recovery firms (if data/files are mission critical); Hope this be of some help/idea. Post back should you need further information. Good luck and kind regards.

First - re-seat the harddisk and reboot the computer. If the computer does not boot up then reboot andgo into the BIOS configuration to see if the BIOS detects the hard drive. If itdoesn't detect the hard drive then it could be faulty. Then the hard drive needsto be replaced in the computer/laptop, Windows installed and the computer orlaptop's device drivers plus your programs etc. to get a functioningcomputer/laptop again.

You can try to use a different usb port of your computer check if it will be detected or try to plugged a different usb device see if it will be detected by the computer. If you have a different computer try to check if it will be detected. If the computer detects a different device it only means that the hard drive that you are connecting to the computer is faulty.

Thanks for using Fixya.

The first thing I'd recommend is to check Disk Management, to see if the computer is detecting is as a hard drive. ( Right click on my computer, hit manage, and under Storage, select 'disk management').
From there you'll be able to see how it's detecting the hard drive.
Even if Device Manager detects it, if Disk Management does not, you know it's not being 'properly' detected.
From Disk Management, you can format the drive, or reassign a drive letter (if needed).

I've had a similar issue where the problem was the power connector to the hard drive. If you have important data on the hard drive, you could open the external case, and attach the hard disk with a separate usb device, such as . Good Luck.

Windows wont start. dont know how it happened.

press F2 to go to the system setup, then press arrow down to highlight Standard CMOS feature, then press enter. Verify if the hard drive is detected, mostly it is installed in SATA 0 and you should see like a serial no of the Hard drive. If the hard drive is not detected, you might need to reseat the cables of the hard drive inside the computer. Make sure that all the cables at the back of computer is unplugged to be safe. After you reseat the hard drive cable, plug cables at the back of the computer then turn on computer and press F2, verify if the hard drive is detected, if still not, try to swap the connection of the hard drive and the dvd drive of the computer. Plug back the cables and turn on comp and press again F2, this time the the dvd drive should be on the SATA 0 and hard drive should be on the oter SATA port. If the hard drive is still not detected, you need to replace the hard drive, but if the hard drive is detected on the other SATA port and the dvd drive is not detected on SATA 0 then you need to replace the mother board.

My computer has stopped recognizing the 160 GB portable hard drive (plug and pray)

better plug it to another pc and observe if it would be recognized by the pc. well, sometimes, portable hard drives takes time to be detected by PC specially when it comes to age, better observe it for about 3-5 mins, and if its not detected, try to touch the usb cord of your portable hard drive connecting to your pc and make some adjustments to it.
