Sony 42" KV-32S66: picture blinks off briefly, getting worse
After years of very heavy - but perfect - service, our TV's picture has started going black for about a second, then coming back on. At first this only happened right after we turned it on, just for a few minutes. Then these little fits started taking longer to go away. The ''blinks'' were regularly spaced. NOW it is even happening after the TV has been on for many hours, and the blinks are the same length but occuring at unpredictable intervals. The sound is not affected. The blinking occurs with satelllite, VCR, and DVD input. Sometimes when it starts, we can make it go away temporarily by switching to a different input and switching back. It may run for hours with no problem, then suddenly have a five minute blinking fit. Or it may blink several times every ten minutes, or blink twenty times then half an hour later later, thirteen. It is not at all predictable (except somewhat, as described above), but the blinks are definitely becoming more frequent. Ambient and machine temperature seem irrelevant. Another TV on the same satellite feed is unaffected. We are picking up a secondhand standard TV tomorrow at a low price, but wonder if this one is salvageable. My husband grew up working on old school TVs, and has basic tools (including an oscilloscope). Also, someone nearby is offering an identical one with a blown power supply for free. Ideas?
Re: Sony 42" KV-32S66: picture blinks off briefly,...
Your crt is getting weak you can get around this buy adjusting the screen control ...... the screen control is on the small board on the back of the picture tube . remove back , with picture tube flashing adjust screen control a touch one way will make it worse and the other will stop the flashing . only move it as much as you need to - no more . this will work for a while and you can do it again and again when ever needed . but the picture will not be as good .... as far as the free dead sony , i would get it . changeing a picture tube from doner tv is just plug and play on a sony . so you can have a new tv for free with just a little work ..........if this answer helped please rate it 3 or 4 stars . a high rateing will help keep mein the paid answer department thanks

Does the ligh blink a certain number of times and the stop briefly and repeat the same pattern? If so you have a problem that is beyond your ability to service it and must be serviced by a certified sony tech.
the problem there is a loose connection on the board, you said that you smacked the right side of the tv and it goes normal.there are parts that should be resolder on the board in order to back into normal operation.
Most likely your Cathode Ray Tube or CRT is going bad. That model number reflects an older TV. What you are describing is a fairly common problem for that television. If you bump the TV and it improves or gets worse then you know there may be a short.. Either way, I would recommend that you use our Premium Service or use our online resources to find a repair person near you. Good luck.
Sounds like the high voltage is marginal.
My experiance is to not put money into a TV that is over ten years
old. TVs stress out their electronic components worse than almost
any other electronic product. After 10 years, there are so many
parts that are ready to fail that your are probably wasting your money
trying to get any more life out of it.
Another option is to wholesale replace the main board by sending it to Module Exchange at 972-298-1212,
or PTS Electronics 800-844-7871 ptscorp.com.
Be careful on buying a new one though. Often times, these new
technology ones are much worse. Always Google the model number of
the set you intend to buy and add the word 'repair' or 'complaint' to
see if it is one of the many models that are customer service
nightmares being produced by even the most reputable companies today.
Hope ya fix it!
Vertical lines down the center only means that you have a loose connection on the Yoke. Re solder all the connection on the yoke and where the yoke connection meets the main board.
This is the classic symptom of a CRT (picture tube)that is starting do get weak. The picture takes longer and longer to come on, it appears greenish and blurry, and it blinks on and off in different scenes, and when it is off the timer LED blinks 5 times. Sony has a circuit called "IK Blanking" which monitors and adjusts the colors in the picture tube, and shuts the picture off when the tube is getting too weak. The good news is that the Sony tubes always respond beautifully to a CRT rejuvination (recharge), and the picture returns to perfect. Since the set is 36 inches and VERY heavy, it should be serviced in-house and an appropriate charge for a service call for your set should be around $150.
