The icons and "Type" information are not part of the file. They are controlled by "file associations" defined in the computer registry. Here are several ways of adjusting the file associations
File will not open on double click - File Association

Note: if you have the Click-To-Run installation of Office Starter and you have "normal" installation of other version of Office you have to decide which version is going to have file association. Only one can be invoked by double clicking on file. Normally that would not be Starter.

Try repairing your Office installation, for example via Add or Remove Programs in Control Panel.

I did something to my pc now all my programs have the extension .ink and i cant run anything or open anything what can i do?

The .ink files are shortcuts. If they have no icon, or the same icon then you deleted the programs. Try reinstalling them. If not, don't worry, just launch you application by double clicking the .ink files. If it doesn't work no worries, that's not a biggie and can be easily fixed in a couple of minutes. There are a couple of ways to do it, read both:
Option 1:

- Go to Start -> "Control Panel" -> Click on Porgrams
- Click on "Default Programs"
- Click on "Associate a file type or protocol with a program." to open the "Set Associations" menu.
- Scroll through the list of extensions to locate the .lnk file extension. The listing will show the description and the current default program associated with it.
- Click on the extension (to select it) and then click on "Change Program."
- Select the program you would like to open *.lnk file types.
- Click on OK.

Option 2 (If Option1 fails):

Simply download following file, unzip it, and run it. It will make necessary changes to the registry. Restart the computer and it should be fine.

Hello and welcome to FixYa,

This is because you dont have MS Office installed on your computer or if you do have MS Office the files are not associated with opening with Office.

PPS stands for PowerPoint SlideShow or can be found as PPT (PowerPoint Template) or PPTX for early versions of Office 2007 and 2010.

Please install either Microsoft Office (needs to be bought) on your computer or (if you only need to view this file) install PowerPoint Viewer 2007 or 2010 (free to download HERE).

If this is a problem directly related to Hotmail inbox or the specific email please check your email settings in hotmail or gmail account for filetypes.

Also do regular powerpoint or ms office files open if you download them from the attachments in the email?

Regards from FixYa.

I received a PDF attachment but can't open it because this is what comes up : This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Set Association...

It simply means there's no PDF reader installed on your computer. Or if it's already installed, then there must be some default pdf reader recently set incorrectly to another application/program. If you are sure that there's a pdf reader, like adobe reader, foxit reader, etc..etc.. installed on your computer, follow the steps below:
Right click the pdf file (i guess you've downloaded the pdf file), click "properties", there you'll see a "change" or "Browse" button on the general tab, click change or browse and locate the program to open the pdf file, select it and click "Ok" then "Apply", close the dialog box and double-click the pdf file, it'll open without any problem. You can also directly open the file on your internet browser like Internet Explorer, Google chrome or Firefox etc..etc.. Simply right-click the pdf file and select "Open with" and browse the internet browser and click it.

If in case you need a pdf reader to open the file, click here to download adobe reader. Open the link, click "Download" proceed with the onscreen instructions and install the program, if you are asked to confirm whether this problem to be made the default pdf reader, confirm it and and finish the installation by clicking finish. Now open the pdf file, there'll be no more issues.

If you need further help, let me know, it would be much appreciated if you can let me know how you open the file.

Good luck.

Thanks for using FixYa.

Hides all my folders and files in drive E

Your files and folder might be infected by a virus so the antivirus hide them for your security. Try search the folders name, after they are found right click and open containing folder and then copy to a new folder.

Good luck

Opening of drives

I have seen this several times and it is brought about due to a virus that creates an autorun file (autorun.ini).

In this file when you double click the drive, executes the file and in the autorun file exists any of the following: -
.... or many others.

It is good thing that you have a strong antivirus which seems to have removed the viruses and therefore when the information file is opened, it does not find the executables it was supposed to run. That is why it asks for a program to open.

You can prove this by right clicking on the drive to see a shortcut menu and in this menu, the bolded menu will be the action taken when double clicked and the possibility is that you will find Autorun bolded.

To resolve the issue do the following:
1) Open My computer program or windows explorer.
2) Right click on the drive and open or explore it.
3) Locate the file Autorun and delete it. If the file is not shown, from the folder options choose show all files. This is because sometimes this file may be hidden.

Try double clicking the drives again to see if you get he same error.

NOTE: Many virus developers have made possible for people to install/run viruses in there own computers by simply double clicking the drives like flash disk.

File type,i couldn't open my drives correctly.

sounds like best solution is to restore windows to when it worked ok. this will unravel the chaos-ed registry and make it appear new again. you do have system restore enabled, right? open START->ALL PROGRAMS->ACCESSORIES->SYSTEM TOOLS->SYSTEM RESTORE and find a date to when it worked fine.
