Crakling, snapping sound from back edge of circuit board. No burning smell. Sound continues after power is shut off and unplugged. Any suggestions?

Thanks for the comment. I did as you suggested and looked at the board in the dark. Yes, there are small sparks (that was the crakling sound) at the base of, don't know the terms, a yellow power unit that has what looks like a #10 red wire atatched to it. This unit (P/N 1836 118A) is directly behind, as you look from outside to inside, two round ports marked F and S. After the set has been unpluged, the arcing continued for about 4 minutes as it, what I would call, 'cooled down'.
    What do you think?

If your flyback transformer has a pinhole in it, there will be snaps and flashes of light, but only when the set is on. If one of the parts in the primary circuits of the main power supply is arcing, it will stop once the plug is pulled from the wall. If you dim the lights in the room and take the back off, or look through the ventilation slots in the back, do you see any flashes of light, sparks or any type of arcing? You said the noise continues when the set if off and unplugged. Do you mean it keeps on going and going, or does it only continue for a second or two?

The white box you describe is called the flyback transformer. It is the transformer that generates the high voltage for the picture tube. The 2 controls on the flyback are F (Focus) and S (Screen). If that part is arcing at all, generating any sparks, flashes of light or smoke and/or burning smell, it is bad and needs to be replaced. It is very unusual for the arcing to continue once the set is unplugged, but in electronics I have learned that just about anything is possible. If you do not feel confident enough to replace the flyback, have a qualified tech handle it for you.

Samsung flatscreen tv model LN46C600F3FXZX has sound but no picture

Video section has become compromised and no longer functional. Audio being separate from the Video may work perfectly, but the Video portion sustained damage to the circuit board or the inline safety diode blew. If any parts of the Circuit Board fail, you need to replace the mainboard. The cost to generally fix a circuit board is usually more than the replacement cost for a new unit. Check all fuses or circuit limiters inside the TV and if there are no shorts, burned parts, or obvious smells on the mainboard, transient current may have trickled in and damaged sensitive electronics. Have a professional Technician do tests to locate the source of the problem.

Plasma made a loud pop then shut off and will not turn back on. There was also a burning smell. Any suggestions on a fix and price is appreciated.

Having similar problem and it sounds like an obvious short circuit if you heard it and can smell it, and it probably took out power supply fuse, so the first thing to do is pull off back of TV and look for obvious toasted components by eye or smell. Capacitors sometimes will pop when they go, and you can see the tops will be bulging out, or black marks, so look and smell all large capacitors first on power supply main board, then check to see if fuse blew. Sometimes the obvious is easy to fix.

Good luck,

It sounds that a capacitor inside the circuit of the has failed. It might have bursted. Check the power supply regulator board for the trouble. Normally electrolytic capacitors at this section should be suspected.

Sounds like wires fried or a circuit board failure. It would seem to me that once you open it up your going to be able to notice where the failure is.

I tried hooking up an old polk sub to my yamaha rx-v659 av receiver. smelled wires burning smell. before i could unplug it, receiver shut down. now it will power up for about 5 seconds and shut off. manual...

If a fuse was blown, it likely would have no power. However if the power board has overheated, the capacitors may have swelled up and burnt out and will only allow it to power on for a few seconds, then shut down. The capacitors can look swelled up or burnt or have burn marks on the power circuit board. You can test them with a continuity meter. Each component has a printed number of it's voltage and ohm resistance so you can test them.

TV on/off button keeps blinking/TV won't turn on

Try muting the sound on the tv, if it is a loose circuit the sound vibration can jiggle a connection and cause the tv to turn off as apart of its safety feature.

if the tv functions correctly while in mute then you now know it is a loose circuit.

if the tv continues to turn off even while in mute it is shutting down by the main power stand by safety feature, it may need a new main transformer.

if the muted sound solved the problem then unplug the tv and look in the back for the main transformer, the manufacturer usually places the main board on the box of the main speaker, the speaker could be vibrating a circuit loose from direct contact, the main transformer is heavy and would cause issues over the long run with high fadelity sound systems on big screen tv's. check solder points on main board.

Burning odor, no heat

A burning smell along with a different sound (growl) USUALLY indicates a breakdown in the High Voltage Side. This is not a direct short (short circuit) or the line fuse would have blown shutting everything down. The High Voltage Side is made up of-- The Secondary ,or High Voltage Side of The High Voltage Transformer, A High Voltage Diode, A High Voltage Capacitor, and The Magnetron. If The High Voltage Transformer is the problem it will smell like a florescent light ballast burning, and will smell each time you turn on the MW. A HV Diode burns and opens, thus no more smell. A HV Capacitor usually does not burn nor does the Magnetron. There is no Cheap-Fix unless you can see that the HV Diode is burned into and you can get to it to replace. CAUTION: Always unplug from power before attempting to repair. NOTE: If you replace a Diode make sure it goes back in the same direction it came out. Yes there is a front and back.

No picture or sound

If you had a burning smell, well the board is toast. These sets are made to replace the entire board at one time. Before installing the replacement module, the picture tube should be checked. A defective picture tube ( such as a G1 short) may cause a failure in the power supply section.
