Re: carpet shampooer

It sound to me like your shampooer is missing the little round suds screen that goes over the hole where the hose plugs in to the tank. Look inside the hose and see if it's in there. Sometimes it gets turned sideways and gets stuck in the shampooer hose. The Kirby should be applying foam, not water.

Re: carpet shampooer

Hi, I used to sell these, and can tell you that they are not designed to suck up the water. They are made to put a limited amount down and then the brushroll scrubs it. Then it drys and ideally you would vacuum up the dried residue that is left. I own one myself, and admittedly the shampooer is not as good as the ones that steam clean and suck it up, but it does ok. The longer you sit in one area, the more water is going to go down, so keep it moving. And remember that it is going mostly at the middle of the unit, so it's good to overlap a bit. If you have troubled stains, I can suggest spraying some type of cleaner on it and going over it with the brushroll--like windex. My buddy also used to sell them, and that worked for him.

Tank with soapy solution is attached in place of the bag. It utilizes the air coming out of the exhaust to blow soapy water on a small screen that turns it into thick foam. The foam is simply laid over the carpet (you must vacuum before you shampoo). Foam allows the spread of a small amount of water over the area so carpet is not soaked all the way through. Foam is left on the carpet for a few minutes so it has just enough time to moisten the fibers of the carpet and loosen the dirt (not too long otherwise foam may dry). Then foam maker is set to "OFF" and you slowly pull Kirby vacuum over the area where you laid the foam. The rotating brush in the shampooer nozzle rubs the moisture off carpet fibers and and throws it into the tray in front of the unit. You will not see gallons of dirty water but that is because you did not put it on the rug in the first place. Carpet should dry within 1-4 hours (depends how many times you laid the foam and what is humidity in the room). After it dries it has to be vacuumed. Solution that did not get picked up with the shampooer brush dries and shampoo additives do not let the dirt stick back to the fibers of the carpet. It is loose when it dries so in order to pick up what is left, you must vacuum again.
You can use any carpet shampoo sold in your local store but make sure that this is carpet shampoo that makes foam and pay attention how much you have to dilute it with water as various shampoo products come in different concentration. Avoid using "just anything" that makes foam. Some household chemicals (such as dishwasher fluid) will do great job but it will leave carpet unprotected so dirt will stick to it so well that you will have a filthy rug in no time. How To Attach The Carpet Shampooer To A Kirby Generation 5 (G5) Vacuum Cleaner

The Kirby carpet shampooer is an attachment that is used with the Kirby upright vacuum cleaners. It converts the Kirby from being used as a dry pickup vacuum, into a carpet shampooer and extractor. Unlike other carpet shampooers and carpet extractors, the Kirby shampoo system does not saturate the carpet with a lot of water when cleaning. Kirby shampoo systems use a special dry foam formula that gently cleans the carpet without saturation.

The link below is to an excellent, easy to follow and understand video that will explain step by step how to convert the Kirby Generation 5 (G5) from a vacuum cleaner into a carpet shampooer. Please note that the vacuum in the video is actually a newer Sentria model, however the repair procedure is identical on the G5 as it is on the Sentria.

My shampooer only sprays a single stream of shampoo and water whenever I use it on the carpet... That and I can't get it to lay a nice even layer of shampoo to soak in and then pick it always does...

You are probably missing the foam screen on the tank outlet. There should be a plastic disk with a fine screen in it on the tank outlet. If the screen is missing, foam will not be produced; and just soap water will be sprayed out. Sometimes the screen assembly can be found in the end of the shampooer hose.

Well with a Kirby shampoo system there is no actual suction to clean up the water, they use a foam to clean if you are using the genuine Kirby shampoo, what the brush does is scrub and collect excess foam, I've used them before and really I'm quite pleased with the Kirby shampoo set it doesn't take as long as my parents Bissell did to dry

I also have found that using 1/3rd of the amount of cleaning solution works better than what is recommended. AND, put water in the tank and THEN add the solution - adding water last creates tons of bubbles! Good Luck!
