Question about System Power Supplies

1 Answer

Light goes on and off

We turn on projector, fan works, light comes on, fan is on high working properly, it runs for 6 minutes, then only the light goes off and the fan stays on (in high position) and within 1-2 minutes the light comes back on and runs for another 5-6 minutes and the light goes off again. Can the thermal switch be bad? We think unit is cooling properly. When turned on and then off fan runs in low position, working properly also.

Re: Light goes on and off

If the power comes on the power box, that is good, so the only the is the mother board is bad, replace it. they have nubers on the that tell you what kind it is. search the web, you can find the new on ebay check, and you can put it in your self and save time and money.

I think the power supply is bad. the light on the front of tower is yellow and makes no sound when the computer is turned on. all three fans run.

No i don't think the power supply gone bad, as your decription says light on the front side is yellow and all the fans are running. This may due to RAM has been not been inserted properly or other hardware problems. Check all the connections of the hardware will resolve your problem.

My gateway desktop PRB 510S, if I turn it off and unplug it or electricity goes off, the computer wont start back again. Wont do anything. No lights no fan, nothing. Then 5 to 10 minutes after I turn it on...

Try connecting a different power supply to it. If the same situation repeats, then it's an internal (motherboard) problem. If the problems go away, then the power supply needs to be replaced.

6 years... I'm surprised the PSU even lasted that long! The power supply is the cheapest part of the PC and usually one of the first parts to fail. Don't worry, a replacement power supply is not too expensive. Good luck!

I have an IBM 74P4410 power supply on which the DC led does not light up. There is no signs of damaged or heat stressed components. Any idea?

To make sure that your PC is working, try to check the CPU Fan is working. If not then no power supply going through into your Motherboard. At this case see to it that you connect properly your power supply into your motherboard and with all the power buttons are correctly connect. Look at it inside your CPU ok! then tell us what is next problem on your unit.

Tower problems

You may need to replace the cmos battery, its a cr2032 3v button cell
Make sure all your expansion cards and memory are reseated.
Make sure all cables are reseated.
your power supply could be bad

If that doesn't work try this

Here is my fix for the dell dimension 4400 amber light problem. It works!
replace cmos battery.
then unplug power cord form wall about 5-10 secs.
then plug it back in, wait 5 secs.
If amber light comes on, press and hold power button until it goes out.

(with light out, press and hold power button while amber light comes on and goes off again holding power button 2-3 secs after light goes out.) repeat whats in parenthesis until computer turns on
it should only take about 6, 7 tries.

After the computer boots, you may want to setup cmos or boot into windows.
After you shutdown, unplug power cord for 5-10 secs then plug it back in.
Press and hold the power button, computer should come on.
I found that's the only way to turn on the computer.
If you shutdown and don't unplug power cord the computer may not boot, mine didn't.
Strange I'd say

Just Plain stopped working

I'll assume you've already checked the obvious possibility that the outlet the computer is plugged into is not working.

Here's a diagram of the main power plug from the supply:
With a short wire (like a bent paperclip), short the green wire PS_ON to the ground pin on either side of it (in the same row, not directly across in the plug!!). The power supply should start up if it's working properly. If the supply doesn't come on, replace it. If it does, then you'll need to replace the main board.

That's the way electronic components usually fail. The initial surge when you turn something on causes a part that was ready to fail to go bad, the same way a light bulb usually burns out when you turn the light on, and not while it's already lit. So the computer was working fine, then the next time you turn it on....pffft!

Hello can you tell me if this problem concern the power supply

Check your VGA cables to make sure it's properly connected (if you haven't already). If that does not work, Take the CMOS battery out of your motherboard and leave it out for a minute, then put it back in. If that still doesn't work, make another post with more specific information about your system.

Power supply

as i think ur processor over heated. or processor can dos not work fine or heat sink not installed properly. remove heat sink, and use heat sink component (a whithe colour gel. u can buy it any computer accessories shop) use it top of ur processor then attached heat sink. and connect processor fan. before installing heat sink check processor fan. then cleare CMOS by removeing battery (because this problem also can happen wrong frequency setting in CMOS setting).
