How do I locate the defrost timer, defrost themostat and defrost heater and how do I tell which is inoperable?

The PSS26NSTASS does not have a defrost timer. The defrost on that model is controlled by the motherboard=> WR55X10942 Board Assembly Main Control On your model if not defrosting it will most likely be caused by the=> WR51X10055 Defrost Heater It also does not hurt to replace the=> WR50X10068 Defrost Thermostat

DEFROST PROBLEM
The evaporator coil behind the cover on the back wall inside the freezer will ice up under normal conditions. Every 8 to 10 hours for around 20 minutes the defrost timer (or in most newer models the electronic adaptive defrost control) will turn the defrost heater on to melt the built up ice. There is a defrost thermostat which prevents the heater from overheating the freezer by breaking the heater circuit when the temp reaches close to 32 degrees F. The entire cooling system shuts off during the defrost cycle and starts back when the timer advances through the cycle.

If this ice is not melted it will continue to build up until the air can't flow over the coil to circulate the cold air through the freezer and into the fridge. The temperature change in the fridge is usually noticed first followed by the freezer.

If the defrost thermostat is bad, it can prevent the heater from coming on OR it won't turn the heater off when it gets too warm. It is clamped to the evaporator coil at the top to sense the temp. If it appears to be misshapen it is bad.
With an ohm meter it should show continuity when cold and none when warm.
You can also bypass(disconnect the two wires plugged into it and twist them together) the thermostat to see if the heater comes on then. If it does then you know the thermostat is bad and needs replaced.

The defrost heater is located on the evaporator. It is in a tube which is at the bottom and can also go up the sides of the evaporator. On some types you can see a burnt spot if it's bad. With an ohm meter it should show continuity from end to end when disconnected from the wiring in the freezer. You can also test the wiring for voltage when it's in the defrost mode.

this alarm is activate if the temp. of the fridge rises and because the freezer section is full of ice form thats why affect the circulation of cold air. try to check the defrost timer if yuor unit have or heater if working if dont have defrost timer or heater try to lessen the setting of your themostat to cut of unit after reaching desired temp. or conduct weekly defrost manually.

Frig stops cooling freezer stays cold. This happens once or twice a year. I believe it is freezing up some where on the coils. Shouldn't it defrost on it's own?

GSS25PGMF FREEZER NOT WORKING. This morning when I opened the freezer door, everything was defrosted. The ice tray was half water. Their was frost on the inside back of the refrig. The regrig side...


You have a defrost problem. You can defrost the unit down by removing the back panel and get a hair dryer and go back and forth over the defrost. Make sure that you don't get any of the coils too hot or you'll destroy your unit. But you'll need a meter to check which part or parts are bad. Do you have a meter? But you will either need a defrost timer, defrost heater or a defrost themostat. But you'll have to have a meter to OHM out the defrost heater. If your unit beeps then you'll need to replace the defrost timer and defrost themostat. If the heater checks bad then you'll need to replace only the defrost heater.

Whirlpool Refrigerator/freezer. The freezer is freezing up blocking the way to the refrigerator


probaby relates to the defrost thermostat...located in the freezer compartment..is the evaporator fan running??located in the freezer compartment.....you will need to check the defrost themostat.. the heater in the freezer compartment, and the timer usually located by the refrigeraor box temp control..
