Why won't my gateway MD78 power on?

Here below are possible causes and troubleshooting steps of laptop that can't power on, hope it may help:
Possible causes:

1. AC adapter failure.
2. Power jack failure.
3. Motherboard failure.

Possible troubleshooting steps and repair solutions:
1. Test the AC adapter with a digital multimeter. It's possible that you have a failed AC adapter. If you don't have a multimeter, test your laptop with another known good AC adapter.

2.It's possible that power jack (socket where you plug the AC adapter) is broken. Remove the motherboard and take a closer look at the power jack. In some cases you can fix the jack by resoldering it on the motherboard. In other cases you have to replace the jack with a new one. Using a multimeter, test if the power goes to the motherboard through the jack.

3. If replacing the AC power adapter and jack on the motherboard doesn't help, most likely you have a bad motherboard. Replace the motherboard.

No a/c power light on laptop

Well the first thing you should check is the amount of power output to the power supply. for example the computer needs 12V but the AC Adapter only gives 9V.
If that's not it then the actual green light is not receiving that information from the motherboard. that's not an issue if the battery get's filled up and the laptop works normally . If you notice that the laptop tends to shut down quickly when it's not plugged in then the battery is worn out. These things happen since the a laptop battery becomes very inefficient after 2-3 years.
One more thing - try to rotate the input end of the ac adapter cable. maybe it's not making good contact inside the laptop.
Hope this helps.

Gateway M-7315U, Ser# 83506341425, no power

I had the same problem. Could be that the motherboard is retaining a charge. #1. unplug ac/dc adapter and also remove battery.#2. Press the power button and hold it down for 15-50 seconds. This will drain the board of any residual charge that may interfere with it powering up.#3. Leave the battery out and plug in the ac/dc adapter (to eliminate the battery being the problem) now press the power button. It should start up.

I need a power adapter

If you want real cheap, then an universal AC adapter is your best option. Targus has one that you can purchase for 24.99 USD, which you can find here.
That adapter works for a wide variety of manufacturer's including Gateway. Also, this particular adapter can provide up to 70 watts of power. So any adapter that fits into that range will be fine on power consumption.
Your AC adapter takes approximately 65 watts of power and should be okay.
I hope this help.

Few months ago I started having issues with the ac adapter it did not provided power to the unit, if you unplug and plug it again from the power cable it worked, until one day just stop. I purchased one in...

Apparently, either the AC adapter isn't compatible (check the voltages and power ratings) or you have a battery charger issue. If you're sure the adapter is OK, then the battery might wrongly report a full charge at a higher voltage than the AC adapter.

So when the battery is plugged in, it will always preempt the AC adapter - possibly even shutting it down - except that, having almost no power left, it will also force the computer itself to shut down.

What might have happened is that the faulty AC adapter actually damaged the battery. I'd suggest checking with another battery if any is available, and not to use both together lest the battery now damage the new adapter. But first of all, check the power ratings and polarity on the adapter against the old one and whatever is indicated (usually) on the PC underside, just to be sure.

No power on has had no issues but now will not power on

Remove the battery and AC adapter. PRESS the power button down and hold it down for 20 seconds. Put the battery back in and plug in the AC adapter. Try to power it on. This is called a power cycle reset.

Gateway lap top is not getting any power, the power light is off any solutions?

1. First of all, go to and enter your serial number to make sure you still have warranty (just in case you need to order parts or send in your lappy) 2. You can open a chat window with gateway to describe to them your issue 3. Possibly order a new part, or fix the solution via gateway support.
ps. My suggestion is either a bad power cable, or bad battery. They will probably send you a new one of either for free if you still have time left on your warranty. Otherwise you'll have to pay, but it'll fix the issue. If you have any further questions, reply to
