When I turn my headset on (opening the boom), my phone shows there is a connection. When I make a call, people can hear me but I can't hear anything. I've tried the volume up/down buttons but nothing happens.

Volume only has to do with the sound level you hear.
The only thing that affects the sound the other ends hears is the microphone, Have you tried moving the mic? Has the headset ever worked properly?
If the other end hears you at all, then the headset SHOULD NOT be muted, but it's worth checking out. They put the mute switch on the underside of the boom mic and sometimes people hit the switch by mistake when moving the boom.
Have you tried to use the device with a different phone? You can also try to reset the device: Close the headset's boom (microphone) and wait for the indicator light to turn off. Open the headset's boom and wait for the indicator light to display a purple light, a purple light signifies the headset is in pairing mode.
Depending on the phone... try andremove the currentbluetooth device. Close theheadset. Go to the phone and choose discover, or search. Open theheadsetand pressand hold the big button. It should then turn purple and should be recognized.
Also make sure thebatteryon theheadset is charged before doing this.
If this doesntwork: Start the search onthe phone, Keep the boom of the mic closed when you press and hold the buttonon the h700. the light should turn purple. After this, open the boom
Hold down the connect button on headset
until steady purple light comes on, then open the boom.
Search for Bluetooth devices on the phone. When asked for a pin, use "0000".
Now the H700 will show up in the Bluetooth device list, but it will not
Put the headset in pairing mode again, this time go to the h700
listed on the phone and select connect. Now the devices will work
as normal. When you open the boom on the h700, it will connect to the phone.
Turn the headset off (flip the boom in) then hold down the talk botton. The indicator should turn solid purple. Keep holding the the talk button and turn the headset on (flip the boom outward) and then it should stay soild purple and ready to pair with your phone.
1.Press and hold the Multifunction button in the middle of a boom headset while the headset is closed. The light will glow blue.2.Open the boom microphone and the blue light should remain on. If not, repeat step 1. 3.On the cell phone, press Menu > Settings > Connection > Bluetooth > Handsfree > New Device 4.Select H700 once a connection is detected. 5.The passkey "0000" is now entered to confirm the connection has been made. 6.The cell phone screen will now read "Bluetooth Connection".
Tips: 1.Provided you set the Bluetooth power to "On" after the initial connection has been made, the phone will automatically re-connect to the headset. 2.To set the Bluetooth power on - Press Menu, Select Settings, then Connections, then Bluetooth link, scroll to Setup and select that. Scroll to Power and chose Change. Scroll to On and press Select. The screen should now read "Changed: Power On". 3.Test Your Connection: Close the headset and watch for cell phone to say "Disconnected". Re-open the headset and the phone should be connected automatically and will now display "Bluetooth Connected".

First, CLOSE your boom
Second, Hold the talk button( about 5 secs it should turn to purple color)
Third, DO NOT release the button while opening your boom
Fourth, your BT should be in discover mode( show the steady light not flashing )
Fifth, open your phone bluetooth and search for device. Choose your bluetooth that appeared on the list ( pair code normally "0000" ).
I was having the same problem with my phone. First close the boom on your headset and hold the call button until the light turns purple. This will reset the headset and prepare it to pair up again. Once that is complete try pairing it back with your phone. If it still does not work, you might have to manually connect to the bluetooth headset from there. Go into your trusted devices on your phone. Select the bluetooth device, select connect. Hopefully that works. If not try calling 1-877-motoblu and ask for customer service and see if they can walk you through any other solutions.
You need to remove the device from the phone directory. Turn off the phone and the device. Wait about a minute then turn on your phone. After the phone is ready for use, turn on your bluetooth and proceed to pair the device with your phone. The phone should recognize the bluetooth and you'll be able to add it once again to your list of blue tooth devices.
