I heard from a friend that these detectors are not good for long. I've had mine about 6 years - do I need to replace it or refurbish it somehow?
Hopefully you still have the instructions that came with it. It will tell you a date that you should replace the unit, how to test it and regular maintenance procedures. My unit says to replace it after seven years.
Generally CO monitors have a test button on them. If it tests and it is within the manufactures recommended lifespan, it should be fine. Just check your backup battery every month by hitting the test button and vaccum the intake vent every so often.
If you don't have the instructions, you should be able to go to the manufacturers website and find this information.
