You have to reboot your modem anytime you connect a new device to it, this is what is great about routers! They act as the reference device to your modem since the modem can only "pair" with 1 mac address at a time, this allows you to connect and disconnect devices to your internet without having to reboot your modem and to also have multiple device use the same internet service at the same time. Unplug the power to your modem and just follow the directions that came with your router on how to wire it to your modem and set it up. Once you are done plug your modem back into power and you should be up and running.
Plug the Ethernet cable into the yellow jack on the wireless router. Plug a wireless receiver (like Netgear or Belkin) into a USB port on the computer. The Belkin will come with instructions, software and a default password (on the bottom or the router). Install the CD drivers and follow the prompts.
