Laser printer problem

I have a brother HP -1030 laser printer. I use Windows XP. It has started printing with a large black smudge all the way down the left hand side of the paper. Tried cleaning drum, no better. Thought that it was running out of ink, bought new cartridge, no better.
Please help!

- I'm having the same problem. However, the smudge is black, blue and magenta along the left side. There's only black on the right side though. What do I need to do?- curryk

- Same problem with my HP LaserJet6MP. Didn't know what to do to try to resolve the problem, so Googled until I found this page.

- I have HL1240 Laser printer, every time I print, first page is almost all black smudge, it gets better from second page on but still has some smudges. Is there any way to fix my drum?- matiriyal
