Unable to connect to internet. Cable router is working, router shows lights on the front. Network settings shows there is a 54 Mps connection, high speed. However, internet connection is not granted. The cable modem works when connected directly to the computer (ie. without the router). I pushed the router's reset button, but this did not enable a connection. Is the router bad? need replaced?
Does your computer get an IP address when connected to the router? (double click the wireless icon in your taskbar and click the support tab). It's probably 192.168.0.something. Does it list a gateway? If so, make note of the gateway and try to see if you can ping it. Click start, run, type "ping 1.2.3.4" where 1.2.3.4 is the ip address of your "default gateway". Do you get a reply or "request timed out?" If you get a reply, you're good to the router. Open the web admin page for the router and see what the WAN IP settings are. They should be set to receive automatic (DHCP) from your ISP. Does it list an IP that from your ISP? If it is set for DHCP (Automatic) and you don't have an IP then it's likely a problem with the modem talking to the router. Try shutting off the router and modem for 10 minutes. Turn them both back on and leave them alone for 15 minutes, does it work now? If not you may need to clone the MAC address of your desktop PC into the router. This way the cable modem will think it's talking to your computer and not the router.
