-The way these screens break is that only a certain portion become unresponsive, bottom or top quater. If you're out of warranty the screen/touch sensor assembly needs to go. If you're tech savy you can try to do it your self or try to get a techy friend to do it.

Apple is claiming that article TS1827 people is only for a specific serial # range and my phone is not within that range. The article itself doesn’t specify a serial # range. Even so, why should my phone be refused service based on the serial # range when this is a documented problem with the hardware? Apple has clearly set a precedent by replacing other defective units and no explanation is give as to why my phone is not eligibleNow here is where the issue is compounded, the first person I talked to said that Apple would waive the fee and replace the phone but he had to pass me off to technical support to process the replacement. When they passed me off to tech support said he won't do it even though customer service said they would. After a 20 minute discussion he hung up on me. How can Apple agree to waive the fee and then go back on that promise?
I called back today and spoke with a different person with similar results. He said if the original conversation was documented he would honor the request but since it didn't list this under my case notes, he won't. After a bit of arguing (although I was polite and didn't raise my voice) he said that "maybe the iphone isn't for me". On a note to the bottom half of the screen not working, just bring it in to an Apple store and they will give you a brand new one. Thats what happened to me the other day, no questions no problems. You don't need to download anything, just bring it in and they swap your sim card into a brand new one. But if you messed with it and they dont accept it then too bad for you.

i had the exact same problem, except it was the bottom part of the phone, (phone, mail, safari, ipod), i wasnt quite sure if i was software related or not since the unlock feature worked, pretty much the exact spot as the other buttons i attempted many restores and even updated to 1.1.3 and still didnt fix the problem, i contacted apple.. 1800myiphone and they attempted there troubleshooting over the phone (pretty much jsut reset the phone) and then they told me to either mail it in or take it to a store, i took it to a store and there isnt anything that they can do at a store than what you can do from your computer with the update and restore, all they do is duplicate the problem with there own eyes and then replace the phone on the spot, so yea i have a brand new phone no problems at all. Thats pretty much the only way.

I started locking up in December, did the power and middle button reset and it worked great.
Now it's March and the touch screen is getting to the point where this trick won't work anymore. It will work intermittently, then for no reason quite responding.
If you are getting to the point where your warranty is almost up and you are having this issue I would take it in anyway even if the reset works.

buy a new phone! or check the lcd @ irepair.us, it is $180. i have same problem, when i dropped the phone out of the window (2nd floor) lol i am a loser; the apple says it is $250, but they require us to have a FULLY-LEGAL iphone! mine is unlocked and hactivated for t-mobile, SO apple wouldn;t do that. The only way out- to try the irepair.us

The iphone lcd screen has two parts. It has a regular screen like any other phone and the other is the touch screen part. You just need to replace them at cell phone repair place.
Since that touch screen part is so expensive, the cost of fixing this will be about $200 - $250 depends on where you go. Make sure you go to where people recommend you the most.
Why so expensive? That is because they are not fixing the lcd itself but replacing the whole lcd with oem part. Make sure u ask for the oem part.

Try holding the top black button and the middle button, when it resets, it should tell you to plug into iTunes. iTunes will then say that you MUST recover it. Install a program called iBrickr (google it). Run iBrickr.exe and select the first option, your screen should go red. Wait and then it should work.

I tried solution on Unlocked 1.1.3 and 1.1.4 versions. Just follow the steps they have been explained really easy way. Dont think this is too hard. Just follow them it will work:
1) download WinSCP on your PC (google it) and run the application
2) download new general.plist file (google it) on laptop
3) download OpenSSH on your iphone (it will not show on iphone but its there so dont worry)
4) connect the laptop and iphone through the same wireless network.
5) write the ipaddress of the iphone from(Settings>Wifi>network details to which you are connected to shows you the ipaddress)
6) Goto laptop on WinSCP type the ipaddress of the iphone in host name field and username: root and password: alpine and then hit Login.
7) it will open like an explorer view of your iphone files on laptop then click on root on the left side. then Click Applications> preferences> replace the general.plist file with the one you downloaded. you have Done the major part.
Now unplug iphone click Settings> General>Touch and reduce the senstivity to 0. 0 gives you the highest touch sensitivity.
9) Now be happy it works….

I had the same problem of my bottom half of the the screen not responding to my touch. I went into 2 Apple stores only to be told my warranty would not cover it because my phone showed signs of physical damage. I thought it was a lost cause until I decided to search the net to see if anyone else had this issue. After coming here and several other sights, I saw I was not the only one and am convinced this is an Apple issue, that needs to be addressed! I called Apple customer service to express my anger, only to be told the same thing, the warranty blah blah blah signs of physical damage blah blah blah. I became even agrier at the fact she acknowledged that she had received a high volume of complaints about this very problem. I asked to speak to her manager and she said she was the highest ranked person there at the time and suggested I call Apple Customer Relations. I did and they apologized and without hassle replaced my iphone!! No Charge, No Warranty mention,No problems.
BOTTOM LINE-Complain all the way up the ranks until your problem is resolved!!!

mine did the same thing. i dropped it so the bottom half wouldnt work. i could do the numbers 1-6 and i couldnt unlock it. i took it to the apple store, and they just gave me a new iPhone. i got a case now so it woulnt happen again :]

Bought it used from Craigslist with no box, documentation, or accessories.
After dropping the phone in the rain on the wet concrete (no water damage indication) I had an unresponsive upper stripe and a small dent near the silencing switch.
Followed the Increased Sensitivity Fix with general.plist suggestions: Worked, but did not exactly return my Iphone back to normal
Followed the Setting up an Appointment with an Apple Genius suggestions: Received a New Refurbished Iphone (New Outer Shell) - Better condition than what I previously had.

Tried a hard reset but still no luck. I assumed that it was a software problem, wiped the phone and unlocked again and it seemed to work for a while.
I went out in the car, came back and went to use my phone and same problem again.
I fiddled with the phone - squeezing the casing together, lo and behold I have full operation again.
I have a very bad habbit of putting my phone in my back pocket - then sitting on it - this is obviously not healthy for the phone or the digitizer - poor phone has had 2 years of this punishment !!!!
It worked for me - I hope it works for you guys too, I think its time for a trade in for the new 3GS !!!!

Press and hold down the Sleep/Wake button and Home button simultaneously for a least 10 seconds. The screen will clear out and then the Apple Logo will appear on the black background. When the logo appears it means that the reset is done.
Afterwards you’ll see your screen light up and you’ll be able to breath a sigh of relief!

i just did this myself in Boca. he tested it, verified that it was still under warranty, and gave me a "new" (refurb'd?) 1st Gen iPhone.
You MUST call to make an appt before you go; don't just walk in and expect to be served. Oh, and only ONE product per check (grrr! i learned the hard way)
Your phone must appear to be in good condition (no major cracks or case splits, etc). you must have tried to restore to latest greatest OS yourself, and backed up all info yourself, but otw very painless.

I found the solution, all that you need is try to conect you iphone on the internet and have the cydia in your phone (you need to have jailbreak your iphone) and install the WinterBoard and the Supreme preference, then you go to the WinterBoard icon and check the supreme preference and have more feautures to adjust de touch. after you install of those things go to settings -> general -> touch and adjust the touch around 0.0 to 0.5 and it's work...

there is no solution to this problem, thousands of handsets have same problem.
If you have noto jailbroken your device, you can take it to apple, and get a replacement for it.
but if you have jailbroken it they replacing the display unit is the only solution...
this is basically a hardware problem, you guys can try restoring the software setting to default and try if you feel that this is due to some new app that u have installed..
but 95% are hardware problems..
so dont crib, if u hv this problm, take it to guy who repair iphone......and replace the display which costs you around 250$.. (8k INR)

Apple will help you with the broken digitizer as long as there is no waterdamage (little sticker in side the headphone jack is white and not pink). If Apple detects waterdamage, they will not cover it, but you can try to get a screen digitizer on on Ebay and repair the iphone yourself or send/bringt it to a third party service.

have u guys restore this phone? i read on no one say anything about restoring it, need to know if u are having a software problem or hardware problem, if software, well just restore it, if not u need digitizer, u can buy digitzer and glass on ebay around 50bucks or more, if u have a 3g u most likely still have warranty. with 2g most like not. but u can take it to apple if u have warranty. either way its a easy fix

This is apparently becoming a very common problem. Apple will replace it if the warranty is still valid. One year i think. I had to try in 2 stores and then got a replacement.

i had this probled but i fixed it with no help. just get ur ipod and hold the power button for 4 secs. it should turn off. and than turn it on again in like 10 seconds and everything should be back. this happened to me on like my 2nd day i had my ipod.

My 3G Iphone suddenly went black. It was none responsive even when plugged into the computer. However I follow previous advice posted and held the power and home buttons at the same time for 10 sec and VOILA !!!! the phone reset. Im so happy but I still dont know why it stop responding.

My touch screen started "freezing" on me back in January. I took it to an Apple store and they did the reboot. It happened again and they held down the top and bottom center button and it worked. The first time they said they'd give me a replacement if they couldn't get it working. Well, it just happened again aboutthree weeks ago. I went back to the same store and they told me my touch screen is completely dead. After this, I was told that I could not get a free replacement because my warranty had expired by two months. I'm pissed! They can clearly see in the system the number of times I've been there for the same issue dating back to January and now I'm out of warranty! I haven't even had the phone for 18 months! I've had phones last longer than this that cost me 90% less! By all the websites I've found regarding the touch screen issue, this is obviously a common problem. I'll NEVER purchase another iPhone.

I bought my iPhone last week and now the touch screen will not respond. I took it back to the dealer (of course) he asked if it got wet ... no. Do you sweat alot? I used it once while I was working. Does that count ? Apparently yes , according to the dealer . This phone is obviously not for the working man? Can any one help. Thanks in advance

I have a similar problem. When on the home page the bottom keys like mail, phone work, in the phone-the bottom keys work (favorites, recents, contacts, etc.) However in any program that require typing like Safari, Maps, Notes, Text, the bottom line of my buttons don't work (space, return, and button that changes modes to numerics)

After the Phone fell, I noticed the SIM card sticking out a bit. Stuck it back in. Phone went completely dead after I was able to make a couple calls. So I connected it to my computer and subsequently to the iTunes store in hopes of trying to sync the phone.
Would you believe I can't even see the phone in iTunes anymore.

I have an iphone 2nd generation. My bottom part of my touch screen doesnt work. This means that i cant slide to unlock but i can slide to power of. I tried reseting it which didnt work so i jailbreaked it again which didnt work either. Apple say they arnt going to take it back because I "messed with it".

My 2G phone is unlocked and working in Canada. I am heading to the States, and would like to bring it in to get exchanged, but am concerned because it was never "activated".

Yes, it got wet, but not completely submerged. In fact, I believe the water sensor is still white, but I bought the iphone second hand, so I have no warranty.

Dropped my 3g from about 3 feet up (coming out of my pocket) and now the second row up of apps (row above "Phone") won't register my tap to open programs. The "swipe" function works on that row, and tap in that area works in other programs.

my iphone always hang-ups especially when i tried lock it using the black button at the top. And then when i tried to rebot the whole phone it takes 3 to 4hours before i can open it. my slide lock is not unlocking the phone. I reset it and did a system restore - nothing worked. Called Apple tech support and they say the sensor on the ear piece is detecting proximity to something and that is why it won't work. It thinks the phone is up to my ear. I have to take it in for repair. Bummer.

My phone was working fine, till the screen went black. I tried to turn it on and the buttons are not responding. It has been black for hours. I plugged it into the computer and charger and it vibrates, but the screen remains black. It also rings and vibrates when I receive a text and call, but cannot be answered. This morning I woke up to the chirp of a text message from my sister. When I went to check it out, the screen was blank. Nothing appears but the phone rings and also lets me know if I have a text. I tried both kind of resets with no luck. The fourth row of buttons from the top aren't working for me, which is the same ones as other people have mentioned. I have an appointment at the Apple Store for tomorrow, and someone there said that they'd probably just give me a new phone. I haven't dropped mine at all; sounds like this is a common problem.

My iPhone 3G v2.1 just started to freeze up and eventually stopped responding to my finger's touch. I can only reboot, by holding the sleep bottom and the home bottom for about 15 seconds. After waiting for 3-5 minutes for the apple icon screen to change to the 'enter passcode' screen, I remain stuck here since it the screen doen't respond to touch. ... I keep rebooting over and over... please help!!!

Top two rows of touch screen do not respond. Tried restart, reboot, and restore - nothing worked. Now I have "Password Incorrect - Enter voicemail password" on the screen and I can't touch cancel or OK because that area of the screen does not respond to touch. So I am unable to anything with my iphone. I have the older version (not 3G) and it is now out of warranty.

The lower part of my original iPhone touchscreen just stopped working as well! I reluctantly upgraded to the new 3G and found this. I am going to be calling Customer Service and asking for a credit of some sort.

the bottom part of my iphone's screen is not working not recognizing the the finger touches. so i can unlock and get to the springboard, in other words i can use it at all.
the upper part of the screen is working fine, i double click the home button and ipod controls appears and recognizes the finger touch.
can anyone help me with this?

My iphone turns on and off also. My favorite icons at the bottom of the screen are not responding, so I am unable to answer the phone when ringing and unable to slide the unlock to open to the home page with all icons. I am unlocked and upgraded from 114 to 2.0 yesterday and the unit worked fine until today.

Phone was working fine. Been using 2.0 update for almost a month. Then all of the sudden I noticed that the space bar, number key, at the bottom of the virtual keyboard stopped responding...it only select the row of letters right above it.
If I move to the web browser app, and turn the phone sideways, the keyboard works fine. The problem now is that the keyboard for SMS and EMail only works right-side up.

- The current iPhone application may not be responding (frozen), press and hold the Home button below the screen for at least six seconds, until the application you were using quits.
- If that doesn't work, turn iPhone off and turn it on again. Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button on top of iPhone for a few seconds until a red slider appears, and then slide the slider. Then press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears.

Ok, this is turning out to be stupid as it is. I'm not sure if Apple MAC planned it this way or what, but it seems like so many people with the same issues and of course I'm one of them. Is this something pre-planned in iPHONE configuration or what. The issue that I'm facing is the slide to unlock the iphone works but when I tap on any of the keys, it as stupid as a wall. Any fix. One thing to mention, I never ever dropped the phone and is in the factory condition with only 3 months life span. What's going on? Anybody?

In my case this did not work, but when I held down the power button first for 3 seconds and then also held down the middle button after about 3 seconds it reset and all was well in the world of iphone again.. :)

Whenever I lock my phone (either with power/sleep button or just waiting for it lock by it self) I cannot unlock it. I push power/sleep button (or home) but the touch screen wont respond. To unlock it I have to push the power/sleep buton again, but by doing it drop the calls. I have tryed everything, but can't find a solution.

I cannot slide my Iphone to open, nor will it accept my password. I tried to shut it down and the slide there works...but after I turn it back on, the same lock happens. Any help would be appreciated. Robert

I have a 8GB Iphone that is having the same problem. I was told that it is caused by humidity. I went skiing in the winter and when I got down, I guess being inside my pocket (really warm) caused the humidity problem. Iphones are apparently temperature sensitive.
Anyway, I tried a hard reboot where your hold down the top power button and lower screen button several times over the course of a few months and it's not working. Everything else works. I can see the display on the screen, and I can hear the phone ringing.
I also had the phone unlocked and had it "reset" on itunes to factory settings. Does anyone know if having done this will add to the problem of fixing it? Would appreciate your help. Thx!

very similar situation if not identical. have owned iphone for 6 weeks and it worked fine until I tried to make a phone call tonight and the touch screen in phone mode won't work. all other functions do have a working touch screen. strange and expensive mess. I was making a call, when I pressed the button for ending it the touchscreen did not react, I tried to switch the iphone off, I failled, I also tried to recharge it thinking that may be it can unblock it, I connected it to my computer, not reaction.

Iphone screen freezes up after an application is loaded. Springboard works just fine but as soon as try clicking some of the buttons inside an application it doesn't work, I can get into the settings but can continue clicking everything in it and it won't work.

The touch screen will allow me to unlock the phone and to select a function (text, iPod, etc.) but once that function opens, the screen locks and doesn't respond!!

Last week, thhe bottom section of my iphone's touch screen was hardly responsive. it was the little section where the phone, safari, mail, ipod apps are. when typing a text i couldn't get a space, or use numbers or any other symbol. Return key, nothing... I noticed when i used it in safari in the horizontal mode, it worked fine. At the time i tried restoring it, but the problem still persists.. Now it turns out the bottom half of the screen does not respond to any touches. Is this a hardware or software problem? and how can it be fixed?

My iphone is not working. I can not type in my password to unlock the phone and I can not slide on the bottom of the screen. I tried rebooting, rescue mode, and nothing has worked. Although I can slide the top bar to shut off the phone. My phone was a gift and also hacked for tmobile use.

My husband bought me an iphone as a surprise (from the States) version
1.0.2, 1C28. We live in Saudi Arabia and he took it to be unlock, which worked
perfectly well until it fell on my hands.
I'm a gadget freak and started inventing and doing anything and everything
I read on the net you could do to the phone, including trying the update thing
to 1.1.1 and there came the problem.
Before I knew that if you do this upgrade to a hacked iphone it will make
it unusable there I was poking the poor thing and I forgot to set it to never
lock too.
So now it doesn't respond to NOTHING literally, I've tried discharging and
recharging, reset, both buttons, 1 button, the touch screen is completly blocked
I can't even try to fix what I've done the only thing left is just flush it down
the toilet.
Please help me I'm going crazy it's such a cute, addictive, amazing,
lovable poking device I can't live without HIM now that I got it, Help me
please.

I have the same problem!
The buttons on the main screen from the YouTube row and up do not work. I can get on the internet, but the screen is acting funny and i can't scroll on certain parts of the screen.
I've tried to reboot, shut down, etc, and nothing works.

I have a problem, second row from top iphone apps. do not work. I have to touch several times or rub inorder for it to open. The other apps. work fine. Need help!

my screen doesnt work at all, it wont slide to sos calls neither sliding it off, i cant see menus all i see is the main screen with activate iphone on it. buttons do work aside from that my iphone is handicap.i've tried several times to turn it off and on to reboot it,but nothing happens its still the same... have any idea how to fix this and whats the cause of this?

The bottom section (Phone, Mail, Safari, and Ipod) of my iphone is working. The weird thing is, I am able to slide the bar to open the screen.

the bottom of the screen isint working ( where theres the phone, safari , ipod , mail) and verything else on the bottom the only thing i can do is slide to unlock but even now i restored it and now its locked and back to its emergency place and now i cant press call or decline or any shit

my iphone touch screen key has stopped working. I can't "dial" a phone number. I can only call people form my contacts, favorites or recent calls. Does anyone have a similar problem?

The top row of my touch screen, both on the "home screen" and on messages (cannot access top message). All other buttons work.

lower half of the iphone screen is not responding to touch. I have tried cleaning the screen and rebooting but does not help.
