At&t wireless router 2wire 2700hg-b

This may seem strange this router has two computers on the nework one is a laptop. Both computers can access the internet. the problem is that only the laptop can access email accounts like gmail or yahoo. I believe the other computer needs something set to do his, but I dont know what or were to check. it can go to the gmail log in page or any other internet page but cant load the gmail messages page when you enter your log in details. This is also the same for any other mail message pages as i set up a new account in hotmail on the laptop but couldent get to the messages from the other computer. The browser on the desktop is firefox but internet explorer is also installed annd can be used. Firefox is set as the default browser. Has any one any ideas how to fix this so i can access email fom the desktop.

I guess you probably aint set-up a wireless router before, what you need to do is get it connected up so you revieve local area is connected then, load internet explorer you will recieve a message like page not displayed. where you usually type in for example type in the number thats on the bottom of the router ie it looks somthing like this for example. a menu will then appear, fill in your broadband username details etc and you should be up and going, if you have problems feel free to email me,, All the best John

Make sure that all the wireless cards are set in the properties to obtain an ip address automatically, dissable the wired lan adpter connections as this can confuse the router. Restart all the pc's and then right click on the wireless pc icon in your task bar and then click view wireless networks and make sure that you are connected to your network and that the internet is available, known as local & internet in Vista. open up internet explorer, go to tools, internet options and delete browsing history cookies and temp files and then refresh the page as the proxy server will need to refresh.

SOURCE: I have a 2wire 2700

The two wire gateway device of one which I have has an issue, there is two updates that you need to get to use it as a cable unit. first I will assume you have xp pro and will go from there. It is detected as a two wire device with norton in the device manager and you must disable the norton two wire device and download the two wwire gateway driver from the actual manufacture. you can go to to download the fix for the modem not trying to lead you to a site but you have to download the patch first in order to use it, as the gateway norton is a proprietary device for this unit. here is how it's listed in device manager
Class: Network adapters
1394 gateway adapter
1394 gateway adapter 2
2 wire gateway usb
Device 2wire Gateway usb- symantec Network Security Mini-port
WAN Mini-port (IP) - symantec Network mini Port
Yellow ? other devices
this is the wireless usb and cap five ports that is offered and you must remove the symantec gateway as it gives the IP address range so go to the 2wire web site and download the file for your type modem to change the ip configuration system with your new service provider. here is the actual site of the 2 wire manufacture. and since it is a proprietary system you can get support from them when you give then the serial number so they know which device you are using and the name of your new acirrer so they can set it to use the bandwidth that the new company covers. You will also have to download a file from microsoft once you make the change. As well in order to use wireless you must insert the Devices serial number into each computer that is using the wireless hook up or it will not work. Since this is a locked question for me this is as far asI go for free.

Since you are able to connect using a hardwired connection and you're able to connect wirelessly at the library, that simply means that your computer and your internet browser are fine. where is your wireless computer and your wireless located? are there any possible wireless devices interfering with the wireless signal like chordless phones, cellphone, TVs, radios, microwave oven? are your walls in your house covered with metal plates coz that would really make the signal deteriorate. the settinngs on your wireless router may also need to be reconfigured and boost up the signal of the wireless router.if only i could remotely access your wireless router, I would really walk you thru on what to check on your wireless router

It doesn't matter which port your PC is plugged into, the router will take care of that. You need to turn the wireless system on. You do this from inside the routers configuration pages which you access through your browser. Being a 2wire router, you may have to use the software on the 2wire website. Alternatively, you can try entering ip addresses into the browser address window. Try or etc
Once you access the router, turn wireless on and activate the security. Enter a code key and write it down as you will need to enter the same code into every PC or laptop that you wish to use the wireless connection. Setting up the wireless connection on your laptop is easy, just tell the laptop to search for available networks and when it finds the 2wire router, tell it to connect. It will then ask for the code key. Enter it and all should be well.

Can I connect a second computer (not a laptop) in my bedroom wirelessly to the 2wire modem that I have connected to my main PC?

Yes, you can. just make sure that the computer has a wireless capability, if not then you need to connect a wireless adapter so you could connect the computer to your 2wire router wirelessly. Another possible way to have it hooked up to your 2wire router is via Ethernet cable but depending on the distance you may need a longer cable.

How to increase signal for 2Wire 2700?

Increase the WiFi power of your 2Wire 2700HG-B

If your 2700HG-B is one of the ex-SBC/AT&T refurbs that are available from Caneris, eBay, etc. and it is on firmware v4.25.19, then you can easily increase wireless power levels from 1 to 10 using the Management and Diagnostic Console. According to Wireless Power levels, power level 1 is ~25mW, 4 is ~100mW and 10 is ~400mW. (Other variants of the 2700HG may only go from 1 to 4 but the link shows how you may be able to hack the power setting to higher levels.)

1. MDC -> Local Network – Wireless Settings -> Additional Settings -> Power Setting

2. Physical orientation.

New 2Wire 2700HGs come with a bracket that orients them in a vertical position. Presumably 2Wire designed the 2700 series to work best that way. The 2700s have two antennas but they are inside the box and cannot be reoriented like the external antennas on most other WiFi routers.

My refurb didn't come with the bracket so like most people I set up mine horizontally. But I kept wondering if orientation matters.

Well it sure does. Changing to vertical orientation increased the power level as reported on my remote PC from "Good" to "Excellent." The remote PC is a couple of floors above the 2700HG. It is possible this increase will not be as pronounced if your remote PC is located horizontally away from the 2700HG.

It is very easy to make a bracket. I used the plastic screw-on cap from a 1kg jar of peanut butter. With a hacksaw (what an appropriate name, eh? wink.gif) I cut a 1¼" slot like so.

If you are not into peanut butter I imagine you can find a plastic lid or similar, about 4" in diameter, to use instead.

Anyway, with about 10 minutes of work you can quadruple the output power of your 2700HG and more than double the signal strength.

P.S. Yes, I realize I am using WEP encryption and that it is not very secure. One of my remote PCs only has 802.11b with only WEP support. I am not particularly concerned. Several of my neighbours have their WiFi APs wide open. One even has the file systems of his PCs completely exposed to the world. They are an easier target than me

I am unable to connect with my wireless laptop

With an Ethernet cable, connect the "wired" port on your laptop to one of the "wired" ports on your router.

Access the router's built-in web-server, and run the "Wireless Networking Setup Wizard", to configure your wireless network.

Call your ISP (Internet Service Provider) -- if they provided the 2WIRE modem to you, they can help you configure it.

How can i configure WPA security on my 2wire modem

To connect to your wireless router, it needs the router’s wireless settings configured and also needs the wireless cards in all the laptops and or computers to be configured with the router’s wireless settings. Then the laptops and desktop computers can communicate with your wireless router.

To set-up and secure the wireless router from unauthorized access, follow these steps: -
1. Connect the wireless router to your computer with a LAN cable.
2. Start your browser and enter the router's configuration URL IP address.
3. Enter the router setup, login and password
4. Change the admin password
5. Go to the wireless settings and change the default SSID and turn off SSID broadcast.
6. Setup encryption key the strongest is WPA2 (if not then WPA).
7. For further security measures - turn on MAC address filtering and enter the MAC address of the wireless cards on the computer/s you want to connect to this wireless router.
8. Record the settings you have made and keep it in a safe place and Save the settings.
9. Configure the wireless cards on the computer/s with the SSID and encryption settings of the router.
10. Remove the LAN cable between the router and the computer then the computers should be able to connect to the router wirelessly.

Hi, You can not use a router to connect a computer to another wireless router. You need to purchase a wireless adapter if you want to connect a computer wirelessly to the network. There seems no other way of doing this.

Let me know if you need any further help regarding this.
