How do I replace the pull cord to my Poulan 446T PRO. It's a combination of a pole chain saw (8 inch) and a trimmer.

You will take the recoil assembly off the saw. You shoud see where the knot broke off the cord in the pulley. Put the cord through the case and the small hole in the pulley and tie a new knot. Count the number of turns it takes to take up the rope. There should be a small notch in the edge of the pulley you place the rope in to wind up the spring and not take up the rope.Add one or two turns more than you counted so the rope is coiled up snug then pull out the rope from the notch and let the spring retract it.

Carburetor change

Primer bulbs pull fuel from the carb, into the bulb and dumps it back to the tank, if you have re connected the hoses to the primer the wrong way around it will try to force fuel into the carb and make it flood.

The diaphragm in the carb is likely ruined from the gas gelling onto it. This will put pinholes in it and then it won't work properly. Pick up a carb kit and rebuild it (if parts available) and then you should be good to go. If you can't rebuild the carb, a replacement will run you 30 bucks or more.

You should not have to remove the entire case to work on the starter mechanism. The starter assembly should come off by removing 3 or 4 screws from the left case. The cord is wound on a spool which has a coil spring inside which must be rewound CCW about 2 turns, then wedged to prevent the spool from unwinding again. Pick the remnant cord from the spool, then thread a new cord (about 3 ft.) into the hole/slot where the old cord was attached. Melt the cord end somewhat, then tie an overhand knot in the end. Wind the cord around the spool CCW until most of the cord is used, then thread the end through the exit port and pull about 8 inches outside. Clamp the cord with locking pliers or tie an overhand knot to prevent the cord from being drawn back inside. Thread the cord through the handle, melt that end, and tie an overhand knot. Pull the knot into the handle, and untie the knot used to hold the cord out. Release the wedge on the spool, and try to pull the cord as if starting--it should pull out without binding and return fully. Hope this helps!

If you are certain the pull starter is spinning the flywheel it may be one of a couple things:
The key on the flywheel is sheared, replace the key.
The piston is not moving within the cylinder, replace the trimmer.

On a Poulan Pro pruner(446T), it wouldn't start so I put new fuel lines on and cleaned the carb. Then it wouldn't fire, so I replaced the coil pack but still nothing. It doesn't try to fire even after I...

I have an earlier model of Poulan Pro Pruner with a similar problem. It is a PP258 and looks identical to the 446T. My unit had about 3 hours of use max.This was the second year. It had some compression but I was not sure it was enough. It would not start and had good spark. I pulled the plug and put about an ounce of oil in the cyl and put the plug back in. Pumped the primer bulb and put carb to Start. On the first pull I could tell the compression was better. It started on the second pull and would only run wide open and smoking from the oil. Something was wrong in the cylinder. I dissasembled the engine and discovered a tiny piece of metal had gotten caught between the cyl wall and the piston. The cyl was scored and the ring land pinched the ring. Time to get some new parts. I also had to use my air cut off saw to get the clutch drum off because the screw wouldn't budge. About $60 will fix it. Overall it isn't a job fopr the average homeowner. What a pain.
