Question about Aprilaire 1700 Dehumidifier

1 Answer

Lightning hit down the road from me and took out some electrical in my house. Frustrated, I accidently broke the remote controller (#70 I think) removing it because it showed nothing on the screen. Now the screen is no longer part of the controller, oops. I checked the unit and no lights. But when I turn it off, wait, then turn it on the lights flicker, then nothing. Obviously I need a new controller, but the unit should work without it. Any ideas?

Dehumidifier not coming on at all

I hope it is only the fuse, but lightening can damage lots of things.
If the dehumidifier has an electronic component, like a thyristor or worse an integrated circuit, it is likely that part is damaged.
So if it has something like a wireless remote control there is damage.
It is the very fast change in electronic field caused by he lightening, what will induce a current in the electronic equipment causing the damage.
Als read ESD (ElectroStatic Discharge) and EMP. Although the change in EMP is much faster than in lightning.

Taking the Confusion Out of Using a Dehumidier

Many consumers are confused about setting the proper levels of humidity on dehumidifier units. And then think something is mechanically wrong with the unit. When in fact, over 70% of the time it operator error. That and a lack of proper routine maintenance are the problem.

The numbers on the LED screen represent the amount of humidity you want to maintain. Not the amount you want to remove. For example: If you set the level at 70%, which is rather high, more than likely the unit may start up momentarily and then shut OFF. That's because the setting is to high. Now, if you set it at 45%, the unit will turn ON and run until either the bucket is full and/or the humidity level has reached 45%.

Here's a good rule of thumb if you use your humidifier year round.

In the Winter you want to maintain a humidity level of 50 to 60%. The moister the air, the more comfortable it will feel. Plus, the humidity helps eliminate static electricity in the air.

Conversely, in the hot, humid Summer months, you want to keep the humidity level as low as possible (35% or less). Also, if you have ceiling fans, using them 24 hours a day, helps to move the air and generate a windchill, which fools your body into thinking it's cooler than what it really is. At the same time, it's saving on energy costs by not having to run your AC as much, because the dehumidifier is removing the humidity.

Just remember, the higher the setting, the higher the humidity level will stay. The lower the setting, the more humidity will be removed and the more comfortable you'll feel in the Summer.

And don't forget Routine Maintenance. Clean the air intake filter regularly. Clean and wipe down the refrigerant coils every 60 days. And don't allow water to remain in the collection bucket to long. As mold can build up in it.

Speaking of which, the water in the bucket, when fresh, is great for watering house plants. Because, when it's fresh, it's distilled water. No chlorine or minerals.

Goes on.... humidity % registers 70 but in just a minute or 2 it begis to decline and ends up at Lo which then wont pull water from the air. I know it is humid, some sensor must be getting fouled up.

70% is not what the dehumidifier is removing. It's what it is maintaining. Which is extremely high humidity. To lower the humidity level in the house lower it to 35%. That will remove a large amount of humidity over a fairly short (4 hours) period of time. If you have an analog unit (no LED Screen) set the humidity extraction knob on Maximum, which is 35%.

Keep in mind, dehumidifiers work the opposite of what you think.

Hope this helped you and thanks for choosing FixYa..

I cannot change the set point on my humidity control. It is at 70%. If I press the up arrow i get 2 beeps and no change. When I press the down arrow there is no response at all. Is there some sort of...

The problem is, your trying to raise the humidity level, not lowering. These work in reverse of what you may think. Lower the level (Arrow Down) to 32% and it will continue to run, but will draw more humidity out of the air and will not stop until the water collection bucket is full or the humidity level reaches 32% or you turn it OFF.

When you pushed the Arrow Up Button, it was already on 70%, that's as high as it will go. But that means, you're trying to maintain a 70% humidity level. If it's Summer where you are, I don't think that's what you want.

Hope this helped you. Please let me know. Thanks.

2 yr. old. worked great. Then started shuting down self changing setting to low. shortly after, shuts down after 3 min. no water collection, unit is hot. Took apart. Cleaned everything inside, and filter....

Robinson, it really sounds like the compressor is overheating. This may be caused by a low refrigerant gas in the compressor. Or the compressor's oil has leaked down. But, if you took the unit apart to clean it, I would think that you would have noticed an oily residue. If it is the compressor (other than needing to be recharged) it would cost almost as much to replace it, as it would be to buy a new unit.
At least with a new one, you'd have a one year warranty and more, if you purchase an extended warranty.

Hope this helped you.

My dehumidifier is not working. The control panel lights-up, but its stuck on 70% humidity and won't adjust down. I took it apart and noticed burnt marks next to the circuit that controls the humidity....

I'd say you're right on target. In which case, although the unit was manufactured my Whirlpool for Sears under their house brand, Kenmore. You can find the part(s) online at Sears Parts Central
http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/index.action . If you can do the replacement yourself, you'll really save $$ on labor.

Hope this helped you. Please let me know. Thanks.

The dehumidifier cuts off when it is set on 70% as soon as the compressor cuts on. i can leave it on lo and it runs.

If you're setting the humidity level on 70 % , that means you want to leave the relative humidity in the house at 70%. That's why the dehumidifier is cutting off. Your house is already at 70% humidity or higher. If you want to remove humidity, set the level lower. If your trying to make it cooler in the house or remove a lot of moisture, set it a 35 to 45%.

Hope this helped solve your problem.

Comfort-aire BHD-651 Dehumidifier broken after power outage

Start with the outlet they are plugged into - any power there?
The only solution I can suggest is to take it apart and check the wiring for any burned or shorted wires.
Also check the control circuit board - most have a small glass tube fuse on them. It is possible it was blown when the house was hit.

Really thick ice on back of dehumidifier

It is now frozen because the humidistat, which controls the on/off cycle, is starting to age and forgetting to turn off the dehumidifier. Try removing the humidistat and, using compressed air, blow it out thoroughly of any dust. Then spray the rotary control area, including electrical parts, with WD-40. Then, blow dry again with the compressor and try again.
