Question about DataStor Mobile Lan Server 300Gb (ps180e) 160 GB Network Storage Server

1 Answer

I just bought a Mobile Data Storage from Philips-Wester Digital. I can't seem to save any file on there. And the manual already says that it will automatically come up to where I can save. Please help me out. I am pretty computer savvy--I just am stuck. Thank you and have a great day!! Megan Cater

I'm not familiar with the PS180E and can't find any reference to it... but I do know from experience that some of the personal/desktop NAS devices will only run in a Wintel environment. They are only compatible with Windows File Sharing. If that's not the case, let us know more details about the model number, etc.

Does anyone know how to mount the Drobo B800i on Linux in NTFS?

Pretty much all Linux operating systems, by default, will "see" an NTFS formated hard drive. So after plugging your Drobo in to your linux based OS it should come up as a mounted hard drive automatically. When you post a question like this it is important to detail the exact OS being used, the version of the OS. etc.. Without the details it is difficult to talk specifics..

LaCie 2big Triple - I replaced one drive, but capacity is wrong

Most likely the problem you are encountering is due to the RAID mode the device is set in. Most RAID arrays utilize multiple drives of the same size, or with drives of differing size, they just use a portion of the largest that matches the smallest drive. When the device rebuilt the array it partitioned off a portion of the 4tb drive of the same size as the existing 500gb drive. If you want to use full capacity of both drives you would need to use JBOD mode, which just strings the disks together into a storage pool using all available space. This won't offer the data redundancy of RAID1 or speed boost of RAID0, but should allow using full space.

Backup any vital data before doing anything, then look for a switch on the back. Rather than RAID0 or 1 the options may be labelled Safe or Fast, but JBOD is usually still labelled JBOD, or sometimes Big. You can try just flipping the switch to JBOD and seeing if it rebuilds to use all space. If that doesn't work you may need to remove the 4tb drive, connect it to a different system and erase it to get rid of the 500gb partition, then with the Lacie set to JBOD reinstall the 4tb drive so it will add its full size to the array.

The safest option though would be to buy another 4tb drive, backup all data and install both 4tb drives with the device set to RAID1/Safe. You would only get 4tb of total storage, but it would mirror the data on both drives so if one fails the other will still have your data. With JBOD you won't have any auto-backup. If a drive fails the data on it will be lost.

Seagate BARRACUDA ST3400801CB-RK data availability

Sounds like the partition data has been corrupted. Your data may still be there, but here's what you should do. (probably not the advice you are wanting to here)

1. Stop using the drive immediately if you wish to ensure data recovery.
2. Contact Seagate for tech support if that's available, OR find a Mac pro in your area to take a look at the drive for you. Make sure they know about hard drives and data recovery procedures (many "techs" dont' know what they're doing when it comes to this).
3. If having someone help is not an option, you can try some data recovery software like Data Recovery II, which has pretty good ratings. However, this is less favorable than having someone look at it. You could still permanently lose data.

Format problem

Do not format the card, try photo recovery software to rescue the lost photos, here are some you may rely on. Both programs can also recover videos and music.

Photo Recovery Software (for Windows)
Mac Photo Recovery Software (for Mac OS X)

Be careful: Before your pictures are recovered, do not attempt to save more files to the SD card in case the original files(your pictures) are overwritten.

Protect excel

This one is a little hidden, it's an option under the save as window. So go to file->save as then you should see either a down arrow on the save button, which opens up a sub menu or a tools option in the top right. Under tools select general options, then you should see the password options there.

Export saved emails from toughdrive, import to my laptop

A little more information. What email program are you using Outlook express? Outlook?

If you are using outlook express open it. go to File / Import / Messages.

select the type of program the emails are in when you saved them to the external harddrive.
click next select import mail from OE6 or whichever you had from above. and click ok.  then click browse. and find the drive the email was saved on. then click the folder you have the emails saved in. and click ok. ( it may be easier to save the email folder to your desktop of your computer and just browse to your desktop).

click next select your folder you want the emails to go to and finish the emails will be imported
