Question about Gladiator Refrigerators

1 Answer

Evaporator motor in top compartment of a Gladiator GAFZ21XXRK00 quit working. This isn't the first time it's happened so I got another motor. Installed new motor but no change. Motor warms up at the windings and there is voltage at the wiring harness but fan does not want to kick on. I've checked for voltages at all other connections inside of the top compartment and I can't find an open anywhere. Compressor kicks on and condenser gets frosted over. Could I have a bad thermostat not driving the motor?

The motor might be bad .If this motor is 120 volts just take it out and plug it into a regular wall outlet and see if it works. If it works then motor is good but there might be an issue with your natural in the unit preventing it from completing the circuit.

Voltage is either 240V or 110V either way it is stamped on the fan motor. You have a sensor controlling the fan and heater which could have gone open circuit and on some cabinets they use the neutral through the heater to bring in the fan so you could have a heater gone. You can bypass the sensor but this should not be a long term solution as it is a safety mechanism. Hope this helps.

If the thermostat has been bypassed it sounds like lack of refrigerant gas in the system. The level cant be checked visually, it will need to be checked by an engineer with pressure gauges.

SOURCE: Ammana Fridge-Evaporator Fan not working

Replace the defrost bimetal . On older Amanas' , the coil has to be cold , before the evaporator fan starts ( bimetal closes ) . This way , heat from the defrost cycle , will not be blown into the refrig section .

Sorry to hear about your problem. Sounds like you have a defrost issue. Hence your unit is not defrosting. All of this apply's if your freezer side has ice on it. If not. you have other issues
Here is a list of some things that can go wrong.
1. Defective heat coil
2. Defective defrost timer

You should call a service company to resolve your issue.

We have a Kitchenaid superba side by side. The freezer is working fine, but the refrigerator isn't cold. I have vacuumed the coils at the top of the model, but didn't solve the problem. I can...

The cooling normally comes from the freezer side, through cooling tubes. There should be a fan either blowing or sucking the air through these cooling tubes. So the first thing you should do is verify that the evaporator fan is turning and then see if you feel air flow in both compartments. If you have air flow in the freezer but not the refrigerator side, then the cooling tube must be blocked.

Most of the time the blockage is ice or frost, and you will need to open up the inner back panel of the freezer to get to the cooling tube. Look for an opening under the evaporator. Suggest a hair dryer to defrost the tube.

The refriderator has quit working but the freezer is still good

The evaporator fan motor could of stopped working. The defrost system could not be working and froze up the evaporator so it is not allowing any air for the fan motor to blow air into the refrigerator compartment. Both of these solutions are not that easy to fix you have to take the back panel of the freezer compartment to see what is going on. If you want to check if this is what it is you can empty the refrigerator out and unplug it and let it stand for a day to let it manually defrost and check and see if the drain pan is dry before you do this and if the pan fills up after you have defrosted it then that is what has happen the defrost system is not working. hope this helps.

An intermittent stream of water from the back top center shroud in the lower freezer section of our Gladiator Ref/Freezer is causing a lot of ice in the freezer. What's wrong?

This is caused by a design flaw in Gladiator Freezerators. The problem is caused whenever the auto-defrost cycle is active. This causes the frost on the coils to melt and flow to the drain tube. If the tube is blocked by ice having formed inside, the water has nowhere to go except down into the freezer compartment where it aagain freezes and forms an iceberg. The solution is to defrost the drain tube but this is only a tempo fix, because eventually it will freeze again. A more permanent solution is to remove the rear cover in the top compartment and expose the cooling coil and the defrost heater. Carefully wrap a 2-3 ft. long piece of bare copper wire, about 14-12 ga. several turns around the defrost heater and extend it down the drain tube located at the bottom right hand side of the drain tray. The little bit of heat transmitted down this wire is enough to keep the tube from refreezing. This fix is now available as a kit that Sears uses to take care of this problem but their kit does not work as well as the above. Good Luck!

Kenmore refrigerator model # 596.75522400 bottom frizer. Frizer works ok but refrigeratot does no get cold.

If the freezer is cold, it is probably the evaporator fan motor or the damper. The damper is the easiest to check.

Inside the refrigerator compartment, top, center, back is a small plastic grill that snaps out of a larger plastic housing. Tug gently from the bottom edge. You should see a small damper door. If it is closed, push it open. If you feel a flow of air, the fan motor is good and the problem probably has something to do with the damper not opening. If you do not feel the flow of air, it is probably the evaporator fan motor.

If it is likely the damper, you can prop it open to get the refrigerator compartment cold again until you can solve the damper problem. I have not had to solve this problem yet, so good luck.

I've had problems with evaporator motors in every Kenmore appliance I've owned. So, it is probably the evaporator fan motor. The motor is just above the evaporator coils inside the freezer compartment.
Lift out the baskets and lift off the drawer front. Remove the drawer slide mechanism buy depressing a single plastic clip on each side as you pull the slide forward.

FREEZER WORKS, REFRIGERATOR DOES'T

There is one compressor that serves both the freezer and refridgerator compartments. You need to confirm if the evaporator fan in the freezer compartment is working. When you open the door to the freezer, you should see and hear the evaporator fan in the freezer compartment running. Particularly if there is a demand on the unit through the thermostat setting. If the evaporator fan is not operating, you can check the evaporator fan motor with a volt meter to see if it's getting power. If its getting voltage, but not operating, you need to replace the evaporator fan motor in the freezer compartment. There are 3 wires that attach to the evaporator fan motor. One hot wire, one neutral wire and one ground wire. The ground wire is usually marked green, the voltage wire is usually marked black and the common wire is usually marked white. You should get a reading on your volt meter of a voltage from the hot post to the neutral or from the hot to the ground. If it is getting power but will not operate, then it is definitely a bad fan motor that would need to be replaced.

GE TFX 22CR Freezer works but not Refrigerator.

If the evaporator fan isn`t working, the frig will not circulate the cold air needed from the freezer to the fresh food compartment. You will need to remove the panel and check for ice around the fan. Make sure it can turn free. If it isn`t blocked and you can turn it freely and there is voltage going to it, the fan motor has gone bad and needs to be replaced if there.

Model number mtb1753ara refrigerator compartment warm. because won't defrost some times.

When it comes to the defrost system it ether works or it doesn't. Since your problem sounds to be intermittent I would look to the evaporator fan motor located in the freezer compartment for your problem. It may be operating intermittently as mine just did a few days ago. I replaced the evaporator fan motor and it solved my problem. I also thought it was in the defrost system.

The defrost timer is located in the refrigerator compartment top center. Turn the screw clockwise very slowly until you hear one audible click and it will be in the defrost mode. In 18-22 minutes the refrigerator should cycle back to cooling.
