Sony KDF-E42A10 Screen is Not Bright

My Sony KDF-E42A10 LCD HDTV has suddenly become very dark and I cannot adjust it. Up until now the picture has been bright and clear and could even be watched with bright sun indirectly on it. It can only be watched now when the room is dark and then it is difficult. The lamp on front of TV is not flashing. The TV is only 14 months old and I estimate that it might have a max. of 2000 - 2500 hours since new. Cable box has been replaced with a new one and cable has been through troubleshooting with no effect. Is this the sign of the projection lamp failing? If so, where can I get lamps for best price?

My Sony KDF-E42A10 LCD HDTV has the same problem. It's virtually useless in the day light. It's dark and I can't adjust it any brighter for day time use that then doesn't look way too bright at night/dark room use. It can only be watched now when the room is dark. My TV is apprpoximatley two and a half years old and I have no idea how many hours are on it........a lot. Is this the sign of the projection lamp starting to fail? If so, where can I get lamps for best price?

The only steps I've taken to try and correct it is adjusting the TV itself. HELP!

OK, I removed the lamp assembly to inspect it. The lens appeared to be foggy or have a smokey, burned appearance to it. I compared my lamp to a friends that has the same TV. His was clear and clean looking. I installed his lamp in my TV and it worked like new. I went to Best Buy and Circuit City to get a new lamp, neither one stocks or sells the lamp at the store. You have to go online to order one. It's $220.00 shipped from

While I have a new lamp on its way I thought I'd play with the old one a bit. I carefully removed the lens from the lamp assembly and I cleaned and polished the lens to try and remove some of the burned look it has. I noticed after I got the lens out that the bulb reflector inside also has a burned look to it.

So, in cleaning and polishing just the lens I was able to remove about 80% of of the burned appearance. I reinstalled the cleaned and polished lens into the lamp, lamp into the TV and I was amazed. I forgot just how good my pictuire used to be.

I can't wait to get my new lamp and get it back to 100%

Try a lamp first, through best buy their about $150 -250. If that fails it might be the optic block assembly which is about $1,000, and i just recently had replaced, and the picture is as bright and clear as when i got it two and half years ago

Ony KDF- E42A10 lamp needs replaced, should I replace the fan also, just got a new lamp 8 months ago picture is dark

Usually the lamp gets brighter when it begins to fail. I would check to see how dirty the inside of the set is. There are beam splitters and lcd filters in that set and if they get dirty then you lose picture quality.

Sony KDF-E42A10 rear projection TV. Won't turn on.

Start by changing the lamp. If you got 5 years out of the old one, count your blessings, most folks only get three. The lamp is designed to be replaced by the consumer. Ebay will carry a replacement for you or you can get it directly from They've got good prices. The lamp door is on the back. Its really easy, give it a shot.
