This is caused by a defective capacitor in the vertical circuit. If you can solder, you should be able to fix this your self. Let me know if you wish to attempt the repair and I will supply additional details and instructions.

I don't have the service manual with me at the moment, butthe most common parts are capacitors with the values of 100ufd or 47ufd in the vertical circuit. Test or replace those first. I will look up the specifics when I get back to the shop and update this.

I have a 20ms3442/17 the screen only shows the bottom half of the picture and the upper half is lines and a reverse image on the first half of the top of the lower half

You have a vertical foldover. Check the caps near the two vertical ICs. HMMM it does not surprise me...There could be a couple of suface mout caps. to check...I do not remember the locations at this time. But try the electrolytics...they are easy to check.

Two inches at top is black

That's called vertical foldover - you need a new vertical output sweep capacitor. Might be worth tossing and replacing.

Vertical foldover

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Offhand, on most TVs, your described issue indicates that the Pump Up capacitor has slowly leaked and/or nearing end of life (dried up). This capacitor would be located very very near the Vertical Deflection IC and would be the biggest of the bunch of capacitor within that immediate area.

Rather an inexpensive component, should not take a couple of minutes to replace. What would be more challenging is identifying/locating it and getting access to the solder joints underneath the PCB (printed circuit board). Should look like image below (not necessarily same value/specs).

DS25390 Verticle foldover

If you have a picture but the top is folded over, your vertical IC is probably good and you need to replace the pump-up capacitor next to the IC. When the pump-up cap (typically a 47 or 100uF 35V cap) is open then the picture will have white lines and foldover at the top. The typical vertical output IC is the LA7838, but I am not familiar with exactly which output IC your set uses.

Half a screen

The picture on your TV screen is driven from the center to the top and bottom of the screen by the vertical drive circuit. The fact that you can see the entire picture means you have a problem called foldover. This is caused by a failure in the vertical drive circuit where the vertical saw signal is altered by a component failure within the vertical drive circuit. You cannot solve this problem but any good repair shop should be able to correct the problem at a reasonable cost.

Sony KV-27V36 27"

sounds like you got a vertical foldover and could possibly be the vertical output IC but most likly its one of the waveshaper capacitors. This repair is one that alot of repair peeps swap out caps one by one to find the defective one and some use a cap checker but the right way is to use a scope to see the waveform aplitude and the shape of the waveform. This is not a user repair as this set will get repaired down to the componet level as np boards toreplace except for the sound. Take into the shop if you dont mind spending an average of 75 to 125 bucks for this repair Good luck
