SM56 modem can not workink on windows XP

-   I have the same problem. I installed a SM56 on a XP Pro 32 bit PC. The driver was the correct one for that system - on the disk identified as \x32\W2KXP\smserial.inf. At first it would operate, but not correctly. When it tried to call, you would hear the dial tone from the modem's speaker, but after a while it would time out with the message "No dial tone", so it wasn't hearing the dial tone. I forced it to dial by unchecking the box "Wait for dial tone". Then I could hear the dial tone, and it would dial, but the tones for dialling didn't sound right, they were loud and raspy. The phone system ignored them, obviously didn't recognize them. I uninstalled the driver and reinstalled it, and then the modem worked perfectly. For a few days. Now its gone back its original misbehaviour and I cannot get it to work. Yet since it did work for a while, it obviously CAN work, so what is the problem? Any ideas? -   Guest
