SOURCE: Green Yellow Red Lights

One of the YLOD threads (go search for it if you want to see the details) states that one of the eBay companies that repairs PS3s has determined that most of the YLOD errors are caused by solder failures due to repeated heating/cooling cycles. The solder cracks and the contact to the chip/component is lost, thus the system shuts down. The fix according to this thread is to re-flow the solder (essentially reconnecting the components). They stated that about 80% of the YLOD problems were resolved by this method. The problem apparently is either on the mobo or in the power supply. I'm not stating that this is gospel truth, but it's what I've read in other threads on this forum and it makes sense.

SOURCE: MY PS3 wont start up, everytime i press the start

That yellow light is what us gamers refer to as YLOD.. Its the Yellow Light Of Death. Your system will have to be serviced by Sony. If your system is under warranty still it wont cost you anything but if its not, Sony charges 150.00 dollars to fix/replace it. They will send you a box in the mail to send it to them. Turnovers usually 2-3 weeks. My condolences to you and your PS3. Best of luck to you.

SOURCE: When I hit the power

Hello there satnamanu

If you have the brief flashing yellow light, then its followed by a red blinking light then you have the yellow light of death AKA the YLOD.

The lights are a warning sign to let you know something is wrong. I can give you the quick explanation, There are 2 chips on the motherboard inside the PS3, the GPU (graphics) and the CPU (brain), when playing the ps3 the solder heats up and when you finish playing it cools down, over time this will cause the soldering to crack and the chips to lose connection with the motherboard and you get the YLOD.

Option 1 - Call Sony

In warranty the Price is Free, out of warranty the Price is $150, the whole process is 4-6 weeks

You can call Sony and they will collect the PS3, repair/replace, and deliver the PS3 back to you

Option 2 - Fix it your Self

You can use a PS3 fix manual to get this fixed easily and at home using household tools you probably already own.

Good luck

Best regards

Was playing rugby world cup 2011 today when some random fuzzy lines appeared on my tv screen, i switched my ps3 off straight away as i though it needed a rest and, ever since, am unable to use my ps3, im...

Please confirm which of two is at fault. you can connect a DVD using the same RCA jacks, the red and whilte for audio and the yellow for the video. If the TV works then we are clear on the TV or we need to check other inputs on the TV.
If so the PSP has encountered and error and it can be due to a memory crash after it was shut down.see if there is an error code or if this PS3 does not boot at all there is an hardware issue.

Red flashing light on ps3

When the light flashes red and you ALSO see the green light on too this indicates that the system is getting hot and you need to switch off and let it cool down.

if you switch on get the beeps see yellow light briefly then flashing red only this indicates failure.

The system has shut itself off to stop further damage ..... supposedly caused by getting hot .. maybe fan failed .... only thing that can be done is to contact Sony for repair or replacement.

I know this post is old but thought the info could help others ...... I hope you returned your PS3.

PS3 Yellow light

There is nothing wrong with the PS3. I read in the users manual that when the the green light on the PS3 turns yellow or flashes yellow the PS3 is too hot and you need to turn it off. It has never happened to me because I keep my PS3 in a open area.

When the PS3 gets to hot you need to let it sit and cool for a little while and then you can turn it back on and start playing again. If the PS3 cools for a while and it still doesn't work you need to call Sony.

Green Yellow Red Lights

It can be overheating but it can also occur for no reason whatsoever. I did a little reasearch and found somone that had managed to get his ps3 working by pushing down on the metal shielding in between the power supply and wifi board, I know it sounds stupid but I tried it out on a coustomer's broken ps3 with the same problem and it worked. My guess is that the spot i pushed down on has a thermal resistor underneath with a bad solder connection or somthing. Tthe only problem is to do this you must take apart your ps3. Have either of you ever taken apart a ps3? If not, you either need to take it to a repair shop or call sony and have them fix it.
