My Dometic RM7371 Fridge in 2005 caravan worked ok on electric and gas during 2 recent outings. Now nothing happens when turning the power selector knob to either gas or electric setting with no ignition clicking or indicator lights.

  • Anonymous Aug 03, 2013

Having removed fridge and done some dismantling the mystery has been solved. The power selector knob shaft has sheared where it goes into the round selector switch which is soldered into the pcb. Sadly the top of the switch had to be removed to release the broken piece of the shaft which has created further problems due to springs and contacts therein falling out.Have managed to find a spare shaft on Ebay and am currently trying to reassemble the switch. If unsuccessful it will mean a new expensive pcb or a complete fridge replacement.

Your refrigerant may have completely separated in the system. Shut of the gas, disconnect the electrical and remove refrigerator from the coach or if you have sufficient room inside set it on a clean area. This operation is what is called burping the system.
1. From the base roll it onto the door and wait five minutes.
2. roll it onto the top and wait five minutes.
3. Roll it on the back and wait five minutes.
4. Return it to the base and wait five minutes.

Reinstall it or test it on electrical. It should show signs of cooling in about 30 minutes in the freezer compartment if the system is not plugged in the boiler.

SOURCE: FRIDGE WILL NOT IGNITE IN GAS MODE

The part you are looking for is the thermo couple. It senses the heat from the flame and holds the gas valve open. The clicking will try three times and then go into lock out. You then will need to reset on the front of the fridge. When installing the thermo couple do not over tighten.

SOURCE: dometic rm2852 does not run on gas

So, the solution was simple but not obvious: the heat probe and the igniter are one and the same item, and all we had to do was bend the probe/igniter closer to the burner. After we did that the refrigerator started to behave properly.

Oddly enough, the repair manual for the refrigerator shows a igniter with a heat probe above it: the is not how the refrigerator is built.

Caravan fridge

See if you have access to a schematic on the unit itself. The fact that it works fine on gas tells you there is nothing wrong with the ammonia solution in the tubing. For that unit to work, the electric heating element has to boil off the ammonia and this is not happening. Check on the schematic if there is some kind of fuse or additional in line switch which is preventing the heating element from turning on and doings its job.

Our Dometic RM2193 cools on gas but does not work on electric

It could be as simple as a blown fuse at the fridge. Also check to make sure you have turned on the electric switch that allows the fridge to run on AC. Note, you can only operate the fridge on EITHER gas OR electric, but not both sources at the same time, thus, you have to turn off the gas switch before you can run on electric.

When this unit is running on electricity, it has to have the thermostat set for it to run.

Here's a link to the Dometic manual for your model.

http://www.alcovr.com/DATA/MANUEL/DometicRefrigeratorModelsRM2191&RM2193.pdf

Just follow the steps for running on electric and you should be OK.
Hope this helps.
