Photos being stored on memory cards....

Hello!!!! Alright, I have a memory card that holds 1000 pictures. I took enough to almost fill it up with many pictures and a few videos. I had no problem reviewing them at any point until one day. The card was still in my camera since there was room to spare. I turned it on and started showing someone my pictures, then it suddenly turned off. I laughed thinking I had just shut it off with my finger accidentally, but when I turned it back on there were no pictures. I don't believe I accidentally deleted them since that takes two moves (clicking up to delete then up for yes), and the blue screen appears telling your options. Since I was looking at the screen and didn't hit buttons. I tried uploading the card anyways hoping they were some how out of view, no such luck. But what got be curious, is that the card held 1000 pictures, so if I deleted the pictures there should be 1000 (or close) available. Well when I put the card back into the computer there was only 147 availble pictures. Also my other card, that holds the same has about 20 pictures that some show up on the camera and some show up on the camera as a question mark, but NONE will move upload onto my computer. Do you have any advice. I really pray I my pictures are still on that disk just invisible for now, they were such important pictures! (Truly once in a lifetime!) I hope you guys can help me, if not thanks for listening.
