Question about Gateway MX6956 Notebook
Have you checked to see if the charge connector on the laptop is loose when you plug the charger into it? You can see if it is by plugging it in and wiggle it around a bit. The charge light on the laptop might stop blinking if its moved and contact is made.

If it's still under warranty, it's definitely worth repairing. If not, get them to quote for the repair they say it needs before agreeing to it. If their quote is anything close to the current price, I would say it's not worth it.

This unit had a RED CHARGE error. Replaced PQ38 solved the problem.
If you get an error on the charge circuit after replacing the PQ38 you should also replace PQ38 because it too may be blown. Make sure Pin 1 where the dots. Also check the MOSFET on the other side of the COIL too.

Sounds like a problem with the power jack on the Motherboard. If so, it is possible to remove the board and replace the jack but this requires soldering skills and is probably not something the average person would want to try.
You might try another adapter to be sure but if it is a motherboard problem the best solution is probably to junk it and buy a new laptop.
