Buy a small slave unit that attatches to the flash bottom.  Use the pop up flash on your camera set to the lowest power.  The slave unit will detect your cameras flash and fire the flash with the slave unit at the same time.  I am doing this with this same flash myself with fairly nice results.

Is the SMDV 10 SM 512 hot shoe safe sync the same connection for all digital SLR cameras?

Most brands of camera's do have own hot shoes for the flash light. That is because they al have a different protocol for starting and stopping a flash, when the camera should measure the amount of light coming back. (TTL or through the lens)
And perhaps, to keep costumers to their own brand?
I found my Nikon commander is capable to trigger my canon flash too, but only to start it not to stop. so the flashes accept commands from more than one brand.

You will need a "Hot shoe to PC connection adapter" to connect the PC sync cord to your camera

A sync cord between the camera and the flash is usually more reliable than the hot shoe. Before getting a cord though try cleaning the contact in the middle of the hot shoe and the contact on the bottom of the flash with an ink pen eraser. They are more aggressive than a pencil eraser but still won't hurt the metal contacts.

Vivitar 283 won't fire

Since the flash is working on test, it means the connection to the camera via the hotshoe is not working. With the flash on and ready light showing that the flash has charged, take a small thin copper wire and short between the the metal spring on the side of the hotshoe (in the slot) and the round metal contact tip of the hot shoe. This should cause the flash to fire if the internal connections to the shoe are working.
If the shoe is working then it must be the camera that is not working. Many modern digital cameras cannot fire older flashes directly, because the voltages on these older flashes are too high. This could damage the camera or if the camera has protection against the high voltage, that will make it impossible to fire the flash. In that case you need an adapter. These are available cheaply. You should try borrowing a modern flash to test that your camera is still working and has not been damaged, if it is a modern electronic camera.

How do you synchronize a non olympus flash unit to an olympus e 500

Install flash on hot shoe and use shutter speed on camera set to no faster than 1/125. Read the owners manul for flash AND camera. Be careful, some trigger voltages may be higher than what your cdamera can handle and may ruin internal flash usage, if not camera itself. better to use a Wein Safesynch hot shoe. This mounts ion hotshoe of camera and flash is attached to this.

The M is for flashbulbs, the X is for electronic flash. Sorry, but it won't sync with flash powder :-)

I don't see a manual for the FT, but I found manuals for the FTN and the FT2 at http://www.butkus.org/chinon/nikon.htm

What do you mean by adaptor?! You will need to by a hotshoe adaptor with a hole that talkes the old style cable plug from your Metz lead and away you go! Try jessops. (As long as you have the lead from your Metz!?

Can I use my Vivitar 385 with my Pentax K200?

Yes, you can use the flash if your camera has a PC connector.

Or, check the trigger voltage: under 7VDC = OK on hotshoe.

Broken flat ribbon cable on SD 28 flash

Hello, after breaking mine this morning I was able to fix the flash so It can fire from the hotshoe.

Any automatic TTL features will still not work however atleast you will be able too fire in auto, and manual modes.

I simply opened the flash by taking off the hotshoe, and then swiveling the flash head 90 degrees to expose the four screws there. You need only remove the two screws from the front side of the unit.

Open the battery door and gently pull away the front case (Be careful there are several delicate ribbon cables that you do not want to snap. From here you can either unscrew all the ribon cables to free yourself room to solder or try and dodge them.

You should now be able to see the rear side of the PC sync socket. There is a blue wire that joins the outer edge of the socket - this is ground. Solder onto this point and join onto the top left circle of the PCB board of the hotshoe. (Opposite corner from where the ribbon cable attatches) There are copper circles exposed on the pcb for easy soldering.

Next, return to the rear of the PC sync socket and note the orange wire coming from the centre pin. Solder a wire to this point, and then down to the hotshoe PCB and to the circle that joins to the centre pin of the hotshoe. (Trace the circuit paths)

Sorry I did this about 30mins ago and I'm remembering this out of my head.

Goodluck
