Question about Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM Autofocus Lens

1 Answer

I have a Canon 70/200 lens that when autofocus seems to keep jumping and can not sit still to focus on an item. This has happened numerous times to me while shooting an indoor church wedding...any suggestions?

If it focuses OK in manual mode then there is a possibility that you have a damaged ribbon cable in the lens.

SOURCE: lens auto focus sometimes does not work.

First make sure contacts on lens are clean ( see enclosed pic #2 ) . If this does not solve the problem the ultrasonic motor may be faulty pic #1.( sometimes switching on but sometimes not , will have to be replaced , unless there is a bad connection between the motor and lens pc board )

SOURCE: Canon 70-200mm f/2.8 IS lens not focusing

I have had to replace the focusing servo motor is these before. The problem of seeking without locking in may mean the same for your lens. Do check for a dirty filter on the front and look to see if the rear optic is dirty or cloudy first. I'm assuming other lenses work fine on your camera.

You will have to refer to Canon re this - it possible the firmware update did not take or was the wrong one.

SOURCE: My Canon EFS 18-55 mm lens stop focusing

Hello,
Unfortunately, unless you suspect dirt in the lens (been taking pictures on the beach maybe? ;), this sounds like autofocus motor failure.
Even if you manage to source the replacement motor, swapping it is a really fiddly operation.
I would suggest selling the lens for spares on ebay and getting a new one.
They are fairly cheap these days. I recommend getting the IS version - it's much better than the original, although build quality is similar.
Good luck,
Raf

If the camera is used you may have a problem with the seller. Before jumping into conclusions however read your manual for your solution or simply search youtube for a help video. Hopefully this helped.

Autofocus gives erratic results

Are you using this indoors, in low light perhaps? This would be the most common reason for this happening. The only way to get around that is to use a "faster" lens, such as f2.8 / f1.8 / f1.4 etc.

If not, try cleaning the lens and camea contacts with a plastic eraser, make sure no debris falls in the camera body (hold upside down for this).

Auto Focus not working for Canon EFS 18-55mm lens

I see this same problem occuring all over the internet on Canon lenses. Autofocus not working any longer. For some stupid reason the lense will lock up and quit autofocus while other lenses will work fine. A light pull on the lense focus ring away from the camera body will give a noticable pop or click which unlocks the jammed lense. Try it if you are having troubles with your autofocus. This is a very common problem and worth giving it a try.

Canon Rbl XT out of focus in viewfndr when shutter half way down

Hello,
It's possible that the reason the "pictures turn out fairly good" is that your f-stop is set high enough that even though the image isn't properly focused, you have enough depth-of-field to bring your subject into "near focus". Does your lens try to focus back and forth when you half-press the shutter? If not, double check that the lens is in autofocus and not manual focus. You can also try cleaning the contacts between the lens and camera. Take the lens off, and then one-at-a-time clean the contacts on both the lens and the camera, using a clean pencil eraser. Gently rub the contacts. Be sure to hold the item upside down so that the eraser debris falls on to the table, not into the camera body or lens!

If none of this helps the autofocus may have become damaged and you need to have the lens and camera looked at by Canon Repair.

Autofocus jumps around and often will not settle on the correct setting

what i do is usually put it onto manual focus then back to auto focus, what it may be is that you are using the wrong lens for your subject :/

70-300DL Macro Super autofocus problem

It is likely that the lens will need parts. Sigma is not the best for repair parts. Typically, the small nylon gears that control the AF break. It is still a useful piece in manual focus. Repair costs would likely exceed its value.
