SOURCE: HP Media Center m1195c PC

It's a rather indepth process and is usually just easier to replace the computer.  Motherboards have many different adapters / slots / options.  If you're meaning to replace the motherboard and processor cpu, it'd be best to buy a package deal from newegg / tigerdirect / etc.  To be able to use your other components, you'd have to make sure the new motherboard has the same type memory slots, video card slot, etc.

SOURCE: i had to change the motherboard as it failed

Look at the front panel of the computer you will see the connections you have. Should be power, reset, power led, usb etc. These are connected to your current motherboard and most times all the connections will be labeled in the case, on the wire connector ends. IE the end that connects to the motherboard. The only exception to this is the usb ports, and they can be hooked up to new usb connectors on the motherboard. Also note, read i said READ the proper way to connect the usb to the motherboard, this is usually a one shot deal, get it wrong and you kill that usb connector.

I have an HP 514N desktop. the black square casing which the heat sink square sits in is broke so heat sink doesn't stay in. I need to remove the black casing before I can buy another one, but it's not...

OLD DT PC, very very old zero support now. and no parts sold at HP nor even mighty used parts at Ebay,...
but here you are, trying to fix relic, id get new MOBO.
what heat sink? mine has like 5 or more.(yours, 2?)
CPU
GPU
memory
glue logic chip too. (seen below as silver fins)
the CPU heat sink is connected 2 ways
(clamps to socket edge or mobo direct (yours?)
The other chips, are soldered down use very special thermalbond epoxy, and a huge finned sink.
Be that the GlueLogic chips, or onboard video.
the MOBO mount is. series 500?PC
plastic rivets are tricky
why ask this with no photos, gee, we cant see where your eye
look can we/? nor damage there, or whats broken
(any thing can break so.... wed need to SEE THAT)

514N its old, hp says obsolete. "RETIRED"
Id scrap it,
there is no books on it for me to read for you or to you.

my guess is the HS mount broke (heat Sink = HS)
if this is the CPU .
we can findout what socket that is and may find a matching mount
but can be a BEACH on PC this old.
why spend cash on near zero value PC. Goodwill has them for near free, and newer. WHO PC.

deep google finds (ebay zero parts for 514s)

tell the helper where your finger points
then magic happens, answers. accurate.
top arrow is CPU socket, right side is MEM. power on far right center.
rear is LEFT

500-wikz01dbtr0wgp0dprkg5vvt-4-0.jpgthe lower chip is glue-logic, can be 2 ways to do this.
epoxy bond. or clamps. (CPUs use 2 clamp types)
Id have to see it close to tell you.
worked in PCB factories for 6 years, so, seen it all.

my guess is the CPU, HP< mobo mount base is damage
or you cant figure out its rivets.
best is to leave that part alone,(can be bought so why mess with it) and work the top end parts that
might be fixed.
What I do is look at the Socket 370 there (CPU)
i look for those CLASSIC side clamps.
if present, off the shelf new HS are sold by all top makers, but it must say, 370 socket.

I don't remember where all the connections (Power led, sw led, etc.) attach to the motherboard of my HP media center pc 873n. Is there a diagram of the motherboard that shows exactly where everything...

I am not familiar with your exact motherboard, but most commonly, the front panel connectors themselves usually have white print labeling them, and on the motherboard, similar fine white markings will be next to the appropriate pins. This is not always the case, but the front panel pins on the motherboard are usually located near the bottom right hand corner.
