Here is one manual:http://files.dahon.com/support/manuals/2009/2009_16inch_20inch_fold_unfold_guide.pdf Here is a much more detailed manual:http://files.dahon.com/support/manuals/2009/2009_dahon_user_manual_en.pdf It looks to me as if the handle bar stem has to be up high enough so that the end of the stem will clear the fold when you fold it down. Otherwise the stem will be down inside the bike and it won't be able to fold. If that makes any sense. The better manual has good pictures and diagrams and explains the locking mechanisms a lot better. Please rate me if this helps.

the lock you should be able to pick up at walmart... if you cannot find the cable for that year you can convert it over to the new ones... they also have them at walmart... i changed all of my mountain bikes that are all early 90's

SOURCE: i need new shift cables
A shift cable, along with brake cables, can be changed out with any other cable as long as it's the correct size and trimmed to the right length. Check with your local bike mechanic for some recommendations on which wires to get, bring your Ironhorse along and a good mechanic will be able to tell you what size you need and what will work best for your local climate. Rust in a cable is a recipe for disaster!

SOURCE: Acquired a 1958 Schwinn World
If, I were you I would get a tune up on it and then ask the mechanic how to shift. It is too complicated to go into here. You can try googling instructions, but the book that came with it, really did not go into detail. I know I have been a Schwinn dealer since 1979. You always have to be pedaling forward to shift, do not pedal backwards, you can chip teeth off of your chainrings.
