SOURCE: microwave question

Quite often this is due to grease or food particles stuck to the inside of the oven or stuck on or behind the waveguide cover.

The waveguide cover is usually about the size of a playing card and often held in place by a plastic rivet.

In some models it is the plastic ceiling.

It can be fragile, and the metal edges of the oven behind it can be sharp, so be careful!

The cover and the metal behind it should be cleaned with a mild, non-ammonia cleaner.

If the cavity metal of the oven is chipped or charred, it will have to be sanded smooth and clean and dried thoroughly.

Then you can apply some high-temperature appliance paint, available from places like Wal-Mart, Lowe's or Builder's Square.

If your waveguide cover is burned, it will need to be replaced.

Quite often this is due to grease or food particles stuck somewhere in the cavity of the oven or stuck on or behind the waveguide cover.

The waveguide cover (also called a spatter shield) is usually about the size of a playing card and often held in place by a plastic rivet.

In some models it is a larger stirrer cover type made of thicker plastic in the ceiling of the oven.

Your manual should address the issue of removing and cleaning the waveguide cover.

If for some reason you don't have your owner's manual, you can download GE owner's manuals and installation instructions here.

If your waveguide cover is burned, it will need to be replaced. It provides important protection for the magnetron.

SOURCE: I have a GE Microwave Oven/Dual Element Browner

Hi Dave in LA,

The wave gude cover is replaceable, the part number is1085082. The reason for arcing through is typically a splatter of food stuck to the cover and then the heating waves overcooked or burned it. Carefully replace the cover (panel), look for any burned spots behind the cover, if the wave guide is burned through, the Microwave is unrepairable. If the waveguide has small arc spots you can carefully clean (sandpaper) and use touchup paint to recoat. I hope this helps and if it does, please let us know!

I would say that the magnetron is the problem. Here is how to test the magnetron.

Test by reading the ohms between the two wires on the magnetron. The resistance should be less than one ohm.

The kitchen timer button does not work on my Kenmore circular wave microwave.

If it has membrane switches, you might have a bad switch. Or, you could have a bad connection between the touch panel and the circuit board. Or the circuit board itself could have a problem.

A hole has appeared in the panel of the roof of my Miele microwave oven model H4060BM type MW6004 is this dangerous and can it be repaired?

If the hole is in the wave guide cover, that can be replaced. After removing it, you would need to inspect the inside of the wave guide, and clean it if there is food or grease in it. If any arcing has occurred, damaging the paint, it needs to be repainted.

If the hole is in the metal part of the cavity itself, that can be dangerous, and it's generally impractical to repair.

GE Microwave oven is making popping sounds.

This is because the coating inside the oven or the wave guide has been damaged and microwaves are hitting bare metal and causing sparks. Take the light bulb out of it and when it is dark, put a glass of water in it and turn it on. If you can see the sparks then you know what needs to be repaired. You can buy microwave oven paint. It is special paint though, you cannot just use any paint. If you cannot see sparks then the area that is damaged is inside the unit and it should be taken in for repairs. If you don't fix it, it will blow out the magnetron and you will be looking at a new oven.

Torn wave guide

If your waveguide cover is burned, it will need to be replaced.

It provides critical protection for the magnetron.

You didn't mention your brand or model number, but since you posted under Oster, I'll assume that's it.

You can contact Oster via the information in your owner's manual or get their contact information from the dealer where you purchased the oven.

WHY DID MY MICROWAVE OVEN BURST INTO A FLAME AFTER 30 SECONDS ON HIGH POWER? TWICE. LMV1314B bought Jan. 2008

Hi,
Actually you don't need to replace the microwave, you just need to replace the carboard piece or "wave guide" and replace the magnetron inside the microwave behind the cardboard piece. The magnetron will commonly arc out to the wave guide if the wave guide gets something that splatters on it. The repair isn't cheap because the magnetron costs about $200 and the wave guide is another $30 or so, but if you replace both these parts you should be good to go again.
The magnetron usually have 5 years warranty, however you need to speak with manufacturer itself for the same.
Let me know,if needed further assistance.
Hope i helped you.
Thanks for using ' Fixya ' and have a nice day!!

The wave guide cover in the Sunbeam SM0701A7E looks like a thin piece of cardboard that will just pop out of some slots. Is it meant to be removed? It's brand new and I want to make sure if it is to be...

Hi,

Yes, it is wave guide cover and usually it transmit microwaves to the inner compartment. If it is borken from screws, you can replace it, if it is just pops out, you can put it back into three side slots and then, there will be a plastic screw, which can be inserted with hard pressing by your thumb/back of your screw driver.
hope it helps
