Tip

Laptop or computer restarts or reboots for no reason?

If your laptop or computer restarts for no appartent reason, the most common culprit is overheating. Take the following steps to address the problem:

1) Download and install CPUID's Hardware Monitor (it's free). Download from http://www.cpuid.com/hwmonitor.php, install and run at startup. Check for overheating especially when running 3d or online games.

2) Clean up the dust and lint often, at the very least once a month. Remove the laptop or computer cover, vacuum or blow compressed air all over the motherboard, expecially around the fan(s), CPU and GPU (video card).

If overheating is not the problem, you can check if a particular software or driver is causing the hung-up. Your best bet is to check the Event Viewer. To run the event viewer, folow the following steps:

A) Click start -> control panel -> performance and maintenance -> administrative Tools. Then click on the Computer Management.
B) In the console tree, click Event Viewer.
C) Click on "application errors". Any commands or errors just before the "Winlogon" will be the last commands before a restart (Winlogon is run only when the computer restarts). Check the error history to see if the same command is the conistently causing the hung-ups

Hope this helps ya'all

How do i unfreeze my scrabble game

Programs occasionally freeze-up and become unresponsive because an error takes place that can't be handled. Unfortunately, the only solution is usually just to close the window, which means losing your game session.

Click the X button on the top right-hand side of the window to close the window. If it does not close on its own, you'll need to restart your computer. Click the Start button, then click on Restart. Once your computer is back up and running, try playing your game again.

How to force delete print jobs Fortunately, there is a way to delete the hung print job without having to save all your work, close all your applications, and restart your computer. Here's how (note that this is intended for Windows XP systems, but a similar approach works on other systems - if this doesn't work for you reply below with your Operating System and version):
  • Browse to Start -> Run... and type in "NET STOP SPOOLER" (this will stop the print spooler service)
  • Browse to your windows\system32\spool\PRINTERS\ folder
  • You should see files there ending in .SPL and .SHD created around the time you tried to print - delete these files.
  • Browse to Start -> Run... and type in "NET START SPOOLER" (this will restart the print spooler service)
  • Double click the printer icon in the lower-right corner of your taskbar to examine your print job queue and browse to View -> Refresh.
Voila :) You should see that annoying hung print job finally disappear completely and you should now be able to resume printing without having to restart your computer.
