SOURCE: Fring for iPhone 3G
Click the App Store icon and search for Fring. Then hit the install button. It's free, it lets you Skype out and you get an all-in-one instant message client. The upside is obviously that it's free to try.

Make sure that in the sync settings you don't have Outlook turned on or something. If that is on, and you don't actually have anything to sync in outlook (or don't even have it), then this can result in it sitting for a long time, if not forever. You might also try to check and make sure that a dialog didnt pop up and somehow get minimized to the dock or something as well. I had a similar issue with my ipod touch and all it ended up being was a stupid check box under the calendars sync settings.
