Question about Boating

1 Answer

My 1999 Yamaha 80TRY outboard has repeated starting problems due to plugged idle jets after sitting three weeks. Mechanic says it is due to today's gas formula (live in Calif). Have installed new gas tanks and gas is only 2 months old. Open to all suggestions how to fix.

SOURCE: 6hp Johnson outboard stalls & quits

go to an auto parts store and get a can of gasoline additive called seafoam. Read the label so you know how much to add to your 6 gallon tank. This stuff works wonders on outboard motors.

Motor will run on starting fluid but wont stay running

Did it sit for a long time with gas in it?

Your idle jet(s)/circuit is plugged up.

When gas sits too long, the components start to separate, and it turns almost into a varnish.
This starts to plug up the jets and passages, starting with the smallest, which happens to be the idle circuit and jet.

Clean out the carb, paying attention to the jet and the passage drilled in the carb body.

Yamaha zuma wont idle. has fresh gas, new battery, new spark plug and what looks like a clean carburetor. Starts fine, but cuts out quickly.

It sounds like it has been sitting for some time. If it has then the idle jets in the carbs need to be cleaned out, they have the smallest holes and clog easy from sitting too long. Fuel stablizers can help reduce this problem, running the engine once or twice a month works best for me to prevent clogged jets.

I need a carb diagram for yamaha tzr 250 cc motor cycle year 1988 it will not rev with out choke on . blocked jets?

Hi, Rolandwhitfo and the usual suspects are:
1. Fuel cap or fuel tank is not venting properly.
2. Fuel filter clogged.
3. Fuel line pinched or kinked.
4. Vacuum line from the petcock to intake manifold cracked.
5. Float needle and seat sticking.
6. Float level too low.
7. Carburetor bowl vent line clogged/blocked/pinched.
8. Idle adjusting screw set too low.
9. Air/fuel mixture screw set too lean.
10. Idle port, transfer ports, slow air jet clogged.
11. Slow fuel jet clogged.
12. Faulty fuel pump.

Hit the gas and the engine almost dies. Idles and starts fine. Changed the spark plug - no change.

What kind of bike? It sounds like clogged carbs, if pilot jets are plugged from lack of service or sitting for a while then your bike could still start but will fall on its face when opening throttle due to lack of fuel, solution=clean your carbs thoroughly and flush your tank.

I have a 2005 Yamaha FZ1 Fazer. It has covered 3800 miles from new and is as new. It resides in our holiday home in Florida. If I leave it for longer than two to three weeks all the primary and idle jets...

Todays fuels are different than they were even a few years ago.

I would suggest you turn off the petcock and run the bike out of gas before storing it - this will take several minutes of idling. This would eliminate fuel sitting in the carbs while it's not in use. I think this is what I would do if I was in your situation.

1990 virago 535 starts and runs great for about 3 or 4 miles

Pull the float bowl caps off the carbs and then spray carb cleaner into the main jet and all other accessible ports on the carbs. Chances are there is a build up of water condensation in the carbs.
