The safest to use is oo grease. Snapper used it on all chain and gear assemblies. It's expensive, save yourself the trouble. Go to tractor supply and get something called "Super S Cotton Picker Spindle Grease 00" . It's $5, better staying power than 90w oil and comes in a bottle you can squirt into the fill hole.

Jerry, I just want to service the gear box on my front end tiller, I guess just opening it and adding grease. Anything else that I need to do to this 40 + year old tiller?

Is the gear box still good? In a lot of older tillers the gear boxes go bad. This is normally due to weeds getting wrapped around the tines and rubbing away at the seals in the end of the gear box. If you have to add oil (grease) then the seals are probably leaking. You should not have to open the gear box up, there should be a plug in it. The plug should be about half way between the bottom and top of the gear box. You should be able to fill the gear box up to that plug with a squeeze bottle. Please rate my answer so I am rewarded points for it.

Tiller engine runs but the tines will not turn

You should look at gear box oil and see if there is metal in the oil.If there is you will need to check the gears for excess wear. Also make sure rpms are in the operating range.Let me know what you find.
