there is a little function to switch it on and off. The button has a small lighting sign. Now put the camera on automatic ( green point) and foto into the night. If the flas h does no go of on automatic its broken. Please take the battery out and put it back in before testing this
camera has a built in flash function which enables you to take photos when the
light condition is not good. 1.
Press the Up button. (for reference of buttons, please see the below figure mentioned) 2.
Press the Up button once until you see the icon appear on the LCD screen. This
indicates that the flash is forced on. 3.
Press the Up button again to change to the auto flash function. 4.
The icon will appear at the top of the LCD indicating that the auto flash is
turned on and ready to use. 5.
Press the Up button again to change from the auto flash to the red eye
The icon will appear on the LCD indicating that the red eye reduction function
has been activated. 7. To turn
off the flash function, press the Up button again until the icon is displayed
on the LCD. Note: A
“Low Power” message will appear on the LCD screen, if you select the flash

The problem you are describing is a problem with the flash charging indicator switch inside the camera. It seems to have failed and needs to be replaced. Following are the instructions to send your camera to Olympus for service.

1. i am not able to view the background from LCD.
2. i tried switch DISP button on and off.
3.Rest all the functions are working fine in camera.
4.LCD is on with Blurr Screen.only thing background and captured photos cannot be viewed.
You error message is your flash circuit which need to be replaced they run around 30 plus dollars for the part or it could be the main board just depends. With out diagnosis it it is hard to really tell.
The flash does not charge separate from the rest of the camera. Try cleaning the flash sensor on the front of the camera or the flash led may be bad.
Secondly, this light functions as a flash sensor which is trying to tell you that you need to use a flash although you may have the flash manually turned off. looks like a bolt of lightning with a circle/slash through it.
